Genesis 1-4

Genesis 1-4

$25.99

Paperback

Much controversy surrounds the opening chapters of Genesis. They are " 'front-loaded' with all manner of vital topics," says C. John Collins, "such as God's work of creating the world and mankind; what it means to be human; why our present experience is so different from what we find in Genesis 2; how we come to know God and to be sure of his love."

Collins employs a literary-theological method informed by contemporary discourse analysis in order to read passages as coherent wholes. He shows how later biblical and intertestamental writers have used Genesis 1-4, and reflects on how these chapters shape a Christian worldview today.

Highly Recommended Commentary
5 stars By Simon C., Oct 20 2013
An important commentary by a skillful evangelical scholar who has devoted years of study to the early chapters of Genesis. The focus is on Genesis 1-4, but Collins also devotes reasonable space to links ("Other Reverberations") with other books, both OT and NT. The first section of the book (30 pages) outlines the discourse-oriented reading employed, to enable the reader to fully benefit from the following commentary section. Collins' awareness of the multi-faceted contemporary conversation surrounding Genesis 1-4 is reflected in the wide range of related topics (environment, gender, Darwinian implications) treated throughout the commentary, plus an additional longer chapter focussing on "Genesis 1-4, History, and Science". Collin's work here has been highly praised by J.I. Packer.
