God's Good Design: What the Bible Really Says About Men and Women

Claire Smith

$19.99

Paperback

Although Claire Smith was a young adult when she came to know Jesus, it wasn't until she went to theological college that she noticed parts of the Bible that challenged her feminist views. Studying these passages led to radical changes in her life.

Too often we put these same passages in the 'too hard basket', or we make up our minds without taking a close look at them for ourselves. But we must let God's word determine these issues, and not the culture in which we live.

Claire takes us through the same process she went through herself, looking closely at seven key Bible passages about men and women and how they should relate together in God's purposes. Along the way she deals with many common objections, and applies the teaching of the Bible simply and practically to our relationships at home and in church.

The warmth and simplicity of the book means it will benefit every Christian - whether you have looked at these passages a thousand times, or you've never thought about them in your life.

Claire Smith

After working for some years as a nurse, Claire Smith spent many years at Moore College closely studying the Bible, completing a BTh, MA (Theology), and a PhD in New Testament. These days she spends her time writing and speaking at conferences. To relax, she writes letters to the paper and talks theology with the two men in her life--her husband, Rob, and their son, Nathanael (both avid musicians). She will also happily watch any sport on TV (although her favourite is rugby).

A good Summary of the key biblical woman passages
5 stars By Amy, Sep 04 2017
I've been reading this book with a group of ladies from church as we explore the key passages in the bible that address women. We've all benefited from Claire's clear logical walk through of each passage and explaining what each passage means, along with the issues some have with each passage and then addressing them. Worth a read if you're thinking through what it means to be a christian women!

Clear and biblical
5 stars By Hoa, May 04 2017
Smith respectfully and biblically walks the reader through the key passages concerning the difference in gender roles within the church and within a marriage. She clearly lays out the arguments against gender role distinctions and answers them persuasively through biblical exegesis. The closing personal testimony and practical application woven through the book not only demonstrate the truth of biblical complementarity, but the beauty of it as God's design. Highly recommended for all Christians.

An essential collection of scriptures
4 stars By Lauren Watt , Jun 02 2016
The main thing I found really useful about this book is that it clearly explains seven of the key passages regarding women and their relationships and roles within the church and with men. It is so important for women to know the specific instructions God has given us in his Holy word. This book is my go to whenever women have a question regarding a number of topics, some of which are tricky to talk about in light of some feminist views.
I also appreciated that Claire is open and honest about how reading these passages has changed her viewpoints and the journey that she has been on reading Gods word.
I personally enjoyed the chapter on Proverbs 31 - understanding how this 'perfect woman' should be understood in light of the genre it is written, how we can receive encouragement, and also be relieved we don't have to live up to all her perfect examples.

An excellent read
5 stars By A B, Jul 29 2014
This is a thoughtful and useful argument for the difference in gender roles among Christians. There are some fresh and unique insights that help in understanding these differences, and why they're not as controversial as some people think! This will be a rewarding book for those interested in and passionate about this issue,

For all women
5 stars By Liz P, Oct 23 2012
The subtitle of Claire Smith's book, God's Good Design, is "What the Bible Really Says About Men And Women" and it is an accurate preview of the book's content. Smith engages with specific Biblical texts that deal with the roles and ministries of men and women, devoting an entire chapter to each passage. In those chapters, each verse is studied carefully, sometimes looking at each word individually to understand what the Bible is saying in each instance.
The key passages examined are the most contentious passages on the subject of the roles of women (and men), specifically 1 Timothy 2, 1 Corinthians 11, 1 Corinthians 14, Ephesians 5, 1 Peter 3, Genesis 1-3 and Proverbs 31.
Smith is even handed in dealing with the Scriptures and acknowledges the counter-arguments and addressing these. She carefully examines each passage in the light of the whole of Scripture and acknowledges the few instances where the passage is not perfectly clear, but outlines the best understandings of that passage.
The book is engaging and easy to read without being "light and fluffy". I would throughly recommend this book to all Christians, whether single or married, old or young, in ministry or in the pews.
