Grace Upon Grace

John W Kleinig

$75.00

Paperback
"Christian spirituality is, quite simply, following Jesus. It is the ordinary life of faith in which we receive Baptism, attend the Divine Service, participate in the Holy Supper, read the Scriptures, pray for ourselves and others, resist temptation, and work with Jesus in our given location here on earth." from the Introduction

^^The longing for spiritual fulfillment, inevitably paired with spiritual frustration, is common among Christians.

  • ^^Do we read and study the Bible enough? ^
  • Do we worship often and in the right way? ^
  • Do we pray enough, in the correct way, and for the right things? ^
  • How do we become truly spiritual?
^And the answers from numerous self-help spirituality books only lead to confusion and the fear of missing key steps on the road to becoming spiritual.

^^In response, John W. Kleinig clarifies that there is no process for becoming spiritual. Instead, God graciously gives to us every spiritual gift that we need, beginning with the very gift of faith in Christ, our Savior. Because God has joined us to Christ, He continually comes to give us life.

Scholarly and Very Readable
5 stars By Trevor, Oct 11 2011
In this scholarly and very readable breath of fresh air, the reader learns of Luther’s receptive spirituality, and the dynamic interplay between": (1) Prayer (2) Meditation and (3) Temptation.

One prays for the gift of the Holy Spirit, and reads the Scriptures receiving the external Word, pondering the words like rubbing a herb so that it releases its fragrance—‘For God will not give you his Spirit without the external Word’. In meditating, God in Christ is heard to speak to us! As soon as his Word takes root, the devil and his cohorts harry a person with terrible assaults, temptations and attacks—Anfechtung. Strangely enough, this evil aggression has the spin-off of driving a person back to God’s Word for fresh wisdom, for the comfort of the gospel, and so equips one for further living.

John gives weight to our place in union with Jesus Christ, who ‘Unlike us, Jesus is an expert at prayer’. He spells out the matter of access to the Father and of becoming co-workers with Christ.

The book is full of treasures to share, like ‘why the Old Testament rarely mentions Satan while the New Testament speaks about him so often'. There is a wonderful section on the dynamics of the conflict we live in, drawn from John’s own helpful rather literal translation of Ephesians 6:10—20.

On the downside, John uses the word ‘borrow', rather than ‘receive as a gift’. And a few illustrations, while engaging us, need some imagination to assist them!

Fantastic Book Must Read
5 stars By Jay, Sep 06 2008
A fantastic book, with very sound and practical biblical foundations, showing the true nature of Christian Spirituality for today. A "Must Read" for anyone wishing to understand spirituality from a well sounded theological foundation. Not a "how to do" book, But a "what is" Christian Spirituality book. Shows the reader in todays culture the differance between "Spirituality" and "Christian Spirituality". Easy to read. A must for all wishing to understand Christian Spirituality.
