Grasping God's Word has proven itself in classrooms across the country as an invaluable help to students who want to learn how to read, interpret, and apply the Bible for themselves. The third edition, revised based on feedback from professors, will continue to serve college-level students and lay learners well in their quest to gain a firm grasp on the rock of God's word. Old Testament scholar J. Daniel Hays and New Testament expert J. Scott Duvall provide practical, hands-on exercises to guide students through the interpretive process. To emphasize the Bible's redemptive arc and encourage correlation across the canon, the authors have included a call to 'cross into the rest of Scripture' as an additional step in the Interpretive Journey. This edition has also been rearranged for clarity and includes updated illustrations, appendices, bibliography, and assignments. A website for professors offers extensive teaching materials, and an accompanying revised workbook (Grasping God's Word Workbook---sold separately) gives students additional practice in reading and interpreting the Bible.

A core book for any Christian
5 stars By Luke kefford, Harvest Alumni , Jun 09 2017

This is a must have book!!! For any one, that wants to get a real grasp onto God's word, this book will teach you in a very easy 5 step process how to read the Bible in context and be nourished spiritually like never before. It will show you how to do exegesis, hirmanutics, interpretation, Appilcation, how to do word studies, with strongs concordance and bible dictionaries, how to choose a good translation. How we got the bible, but more than anything this will teach you how to be more effective for God and you won't be able to help but apply what you are learning to someone else results in effective making of Disciples.
The section that recommends books to build your library is very helpful.
God bless I hope this helps

Clear and comprehensive guide to reading the Bible
5 stars By Hoa, Feb 13 2016
Grasping God's Word is a comprehensive guide to reading and applying the Bible. It covers in a readable style the skills involved with studying a text, looking for literary features, conducting word studies and learning the literary, historical and cultural context of a passage. The authors then go on to a discussion of relevant philosophical questions about interpretation, without being too technical or dry. In the final section the authors provide a chapter on each genre of the Bible, covering both Old and New Testaments, with specific advice and worked examples for reading, interpreting and applying each part of the Bible. One weakness is that some sections, such as that on reading Wisdom or Prophetic literature, the authors provide useful summaries of possible applications, but run the risk of giving too narrow or oversimplified range of applications. These sections could be improved, but are still very useful for someone unsure of how to approach these texts. Overall, this is a solid and essential read for those wanting to read and interpret the Bible faithfully.
