Haslam's Journey

Christopher J H Wright

$24.99

Paperback

An unusual autobiography that has been in print for 120 years. Author Chris Wright has abridged into one volume, lightly modernized and annotated "From Death into Life" and "Yet not I". Famously "born again" during one of his own sermons, he was destined to become one of the foremost evangelists of his day. Many evangelicals become more broadminded as they gain seniority, while Haslam was on a journey away from Pusey. Starting in Cornwall, then Bath and Norfolk he ended in a plum parish in Mayfair (with Gladstone and Disraeli in his congregation). He was a contributor to early Keswick Conventions.

When he preached things happened. Famously 'born again' during one of his own sermons, he later sparked off a walk-out of canons at St Paul's Cathedral while he was preaching! Moving 'down the candle' rather than up. So often, ministers start off as hard-line evangelicals but become more tolerant and open-minded as they gain seniority. Haslam started off as an 'educated' Puseyite but after conversion he became committed to soundness, social work and revival. He was a contributor to early Keswick Conventions. This book contains passages from "Yet Not I" and "From Death to Life" abridged, slightly modernised and with copious notes and appendices by the author.
