This is an intensely dramatic autobiography of one of China's house church leaders, a man who, despite his relative youth, (he is in his mid forties) has suffered prolonged torture and imprisonment for his faith. The book challenges any complacency about the situation in China: persecution is a daily reality for millions. This is the story of how God took a young, half-starved boy from a poor village in Henan province and used him mightily to preach the gospel despite intense persecution.

The book The Heavenly Man was awarded the Christian Book of the Year in 2003 The title comes from the name by which Brother Yun was known amongst the house church networks. He gained that name from one night of interrogation when he would only answer "I am a heavenly man!", instead of revealing his true name, in order to protect other Christians from the police.

This Book is Like a 21st Century Version of The Acts of the Apostles
4 stars By Dr. Bernard Low, 02 Jan 2015
When I started reading this book, I could not put it down! The story of Brother Yun is simply remarkable. Reading this book is like reading a modern-day version of The Acts of the Apostles. What Yun experienced - the miraculous provision of a Bible, dreams and visions, hearing the voice of God, healings and exorcisms, and miraculous escape from prison to name just a few - may sound incredible to the ears of a modern-day Western-educated Christian but it only goes to show how far the church of today, with its wealth and abundant resources and living and ministering in its comfort zone, has estranged itself from apostolic Christianity. Reading the life and ministry of Brother Yun reminds us that God is still very much alive and still works wonders on behalf of His Church. It also causes one to wonder, "Where is God in our personal experience today?" Is He just a theological construct or a living reality? Last but not least, it makes one get on his knees to long and pray for the kind of revival that the Chinese churches have experienced. But as Brother Yun has thought-provokingly pointed out, if we want revival, are we prepared to pay the price of obedience, suffering and even death? This book is a must-read for any Christian who wants to understand what true discipleship is all about. It is sure to challenge and inspire him or her to take up one's cross and follow Jesus all the way to the end. Highly recommended!

Eye opening
4 stars By Maria, 10 Dec 2014
We live in a land of abundance in Australia and take owning a bible for granted. But when you read of the lengths and extent people will fast and pray for a bible and the cost of owning one, you are reminded again of the treasure that we can have so freely here. Brother Yun's passion to memorise whole books of the Bible and share that verbatim and see people converted, repent from their sins and turn to God in faith shows again the power of God's word.
