The story of Hudson Taylor is one of adventure and excitement - of improbable answers to prayer, opposition from the establishment and triumphs of faith. Even more interesting is the story of the relationship at the heart of it all - the story of Hudson and Maria Taylor. There are few love stories as enchanting as that of Hudson Taylor the pioneering missionary and Maria Dyer. Their relationship and short marriage flourished in the bitterest of circumstances because their lives were firmly rooted in their devotion to God, as well as each other. They were a perfect match, (though not perfect people), a couple who show us how to share our lives at the deepest level. John Pollock draws his material extensively from original letters and papers. Impacting Insightful
5 stars By Ed, Dec 09 2014
This biography of Hudson Taylor is an excellent read and typical of John Pollock's insightful style of writing. Pollock delves beneath the heroic gloss of earlier biographies of Taylor and looks to encourage the reader by giving them a candid insight into Taylor's struggles and spiritual burdens. It provides a fascinating account of the ground-breaking advance of the gospel in China throughout the 19th century and how this advance helped shape a rising concern for missions in the West.

In the words of Colossians 1:29, Taylor strenuously contended with all the energy Christ so powerfully worked within him, and at times reading about his labours is wearying! Yet overall, the book is powerfully refreshing for the follower of Christ - for through Taylor's life we are once more encouraged to trust wholly upon our great God to do truly great things. We also see that God in His sovereignty truly does work all things out for the good of those who love Him.

This book is a must buy. It will fuel your fire for global mission and encourage you to depend greatly upon Jesus.
