Gripping Inspiring
5 stars By Ed, Oct 11 2016
John G. Paton was a pioneering missionary to New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) during the later half of the 19th century and into the 20th century. This autobiography is an inspiring recollection of his life and most notably his ministry in Vanuatu - recounting his initial (and pain-stricken) visit to Tanna Island, flight to Australia and then return to Aniwa Island. Not only was Paton used under God to lead the island of Aniwa to Christ, but he was also pivotal in mobilizing Australia New Zealand in supporting mission work in the "South Seas". Paton himself describes this as his greatest work.

This autobiography is hard to put down. It's short chapters reinforce the lively tempo of the narrative - each episode recounting the faithfulness of God and Paton's absolute confidence in His goodness, presence and sovereignty. The book is certainly a product of it's time, and whilst some missionary practices might have changed, it is nonetheless a powerful encouragement to confidence in God and engagement in carrying out the Great Commission.
