Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots (Modern English Version)

Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots (Modern English Version)

J C Ryle

$7.99

Paperback

"I only know it is far easier to be a Christian among singing, praying, sympathising Christians in a public room than to be a consistent Christian in a quiet, retired, out-of-the-way, uncongenial home."

J. C. Ryle wrote his classic on holiness over a hundred and thirty years ago, yet how poignant his words still are for us today. Sadly, we all know how easy it is to appear godly in public, while behind closed doors to continue in our own sin.

This modern English version of Ryle's 1883 book will challenge a new generation of readers to live a Christ-like life. Ryle's timeless wisdom reminds us that holiness shouldn't be cold, distant and unobtainable, but that Christ himself is the root of our godliness. Be exhorted not to simply settle for half-hearted holiness, but to strive to be holy in every area of our lives. Many Scripture references have been updated to NIV from the KJV.

A misrepresntation, not an update
1 stars By Stephen, Oct 26 2015
There's great value in new editions of classic books which are genuine "updates" - just modernising punctuation, grammar and wording without changing the original author's meaning and content. But this book is a complete disappointment. Firstly, it completely omits 11 of the original 21 chapters!

Secondly, the anonymous reviser(s) have taken great liberties in altering Ryle's meaning and message. For example, they change Ryle's term "professing Christians" to "Christians" (e.g. twice in the first two paragraphs of chapter 9). Ryle was an ardent evangelical who insisted on the difference between a "professing Christian" and a real one, and his book "Holiness" was evangelistic in nature as well as teaching for those truly saved. It's tragic that Ryle's would-be revisers can't even understand what they are trying to revise!

Their replacement of most of the Bible quotations with quotes from the 2011 NIV is also out of place and unnecessary, when far more accurate versions (NKJV, ESV) are widely used and more equivalent as updates to Ryle's KJV passages. For those who must have a shortened update, "Aspects of Holiness" (also avail from Koorong) is a much better representation of Ryle's message. But the original is still in print, and was a fantastic blessing in my life!
