Making a difference
4 stars By Beth Doherty, Aug 19 2016
This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in recent years, specifically because I could identify so much with the author's very real desire to do something tangible to address poverty. Claire Diaz Ortiz is in her thirties and was an early adopter of Twitter. She is now employed by Twitter and has been recognised as the woman who got the Pope on Twitter in 2012. Claire arrived in Kenya with one of her best friends in 2006, and, having been told of free accommodation at a local orphanage, they fronted up looking for a bed. Initially, the two girls were more interested in climbing a mountain than the work being done at the orphanage, but a year later, Claire was still there, having never climbed the mountain, but yet having founded an NGO called Hope Runs. Based on her own passion for running, the talent she saw in the orphanage's Kenyan children, and a desire to do something creative, the NGO she founded empowers AIDS orphans through training, social entrepreneurship and education. The story is told by both Claire and Sammy, starting at their first meeting, and chronicling Sammy's difficult past and emerging future. This is an easy and inspiring read, showing that often the little things count.

Inspiring Biography
3 stars By Jacqui, May 04 2015
This is the true story of how God used two young American women to bring hope to Sammy and a number of kids in an orphanage in Kenya. Claire and Lara, after both going through break ups with their boyfriends decide to travel the world for a year. The end of their year finds them in Kenya where they stay at a guest house run by the Imani orphanage. Here Claire meets Sammy and senses that God has more for her to do here. She seeks God as to what next. Eventually she and Lara return to this orphanage for a longer time and begin a running program with the kids called Hope Runs.
This biography is written by both Sammy, a young Kenyan boy whose life is changed completely by the love and help of Claire and Lara, and by Claire so you get to read the parallel journey of their lives. Although it is another story that inspires hope and shows how God can use all circumstances to achieve his purposes, I was really inspired and encouraged by the unusual and amazing friendship between Lara and Claire. I was left feeling really inspired by God's power displayed through relationships that show unconditional love and acceptance.
