This translation is so helpful, not only for children, but also for people with lower literacy or English as a second language. Features I really appreciate include: 1. Helpful little footnotes on cultural references eg. 'Is it right to heal on the Sabbath?' Has the footnote: it was against Jewish law to work on the Sabbath day. 2. Direct Old Testament quotations in the New Testament have the Old Testament reference included in italics at the end of the quotation. 3. Includes a dictionary at the back, but all throughout the text words in the dictionary are annotated with a 'd'. Eg prophet, Sabbath. 4. Great set of maps in the back that have enough detail to add to understanding, but are not overwhelming. My kids are enjoying this bible as I read it to them, but I too am enjoying this translation with some of the harder concepts really helpfully described. One or two of these lose a little meaning, such as the sermon on the mount (Mathew 5) reading 'happy' instead of blessed, but overall the translational interpretations are excellent.
This is an awesome bible for children. It is easy to read and written in a language that is easy for children to understand. I use this bible with the children at my Sunday School and the children respond to it well. In my opinion, it is one of the better translations of the bible out there. Good for Sunday school, good for children to read at home.
I can still remember so clearly the day I was given my first "real" Bible. It is true about the Word of God (Jesus) being the Bead of Life, because I ate this book up. I read it every day and found it captivating and easy to understand. I also enjoyed the extras such as the maps and commentaries. When I was older (a teen) and got a more traditional (adult) translation, I was concerned that in order to make it understandable for children, they over simplified the text and thus missed a lot of depth and context. However, for small children it is still a good translation. This Bible is still tucked away in my treasure box. I bring it out occasionally and look through at the passages I underlined, the notes I wrote and the messages left by famous or visiting pastors when I got them to sign the back pages. Your little ones will love it.
I highly recommend this translation for children. It is easy to read aloud to children and I regularly use it in homeschooling. I feel it is the most faithful overall, compared with other translations. Occasionally there are passages that lose a little in translation in my opnion, but that probably happens in every English translation and I am very happy using it and trusting that it will be the best for my children to read themselves.
In my opinion this is the best Bible translation for children. We use these for our kids programs at church. As someone with training in Greek exegesis translation I was also very impressed with many of the translational decisions that have been made to convey concepts as accurately as possible to children whilst being realistic about the reading level of their audience. I believe this is a much superior kids translation to the CEV, the only downside being that the CEV is the one that children's SRE curriculums and the like will continue to quote from.
