Inheritance

Audrey Assad

$21.99

Cd

Producer and daughter of a Syrian refugee, Audrey Assad internationally releases her second independent album, Inheritance.

Approaching this collection of songs with a sense of delicate appreciation balanced with artistic integrity, Audrey co-produces Inheritance with Daniel James (Canon Blue, Joy Williams, Among Savages). The resulting album projects a unique soundscape through a cinematic-styled approach featuring lush textures and wide, expansive rhythms that allow her voice to glide effortlessly over a diverse landscape of prayerful contemplation.

"I knew that Inheritance had to be much more than me going into the studio and simply doing pretty renditions of hymns we all know and love," says Audrey. "I couldn't be satisfied with that I had to make something both bright and dark coloured honestly with my own doubts and weaknesses, so that the Lord who inspired these songs could be even more visible in it. Inheritance is an offering I am humbled, privileged and challenged to make and I pray it will be a gift to anyone who hears it.."

In many ways, a hymns album is a return home for Audrey who grew up learning to sing in a Plymouth Brethren community. "I was raised in a church where we didn't use any instruments on Sunday mornings," Audrey notes. "I learned to sing there, from the old hymnbooks, in four-part harmony, with my family and my neighbours. It was multi-generational, it was deep and rich and beautiful, and like most of my favorite worship music, it was steeped in community.." All the songs on Inheritance infuse a modern sensibility with Audrey's influences to form something entirely new.

Meet the Artist

Audrey Assad

Audrey Assad was born in New Jersey in July 1983, and was raised in a religious Protestant household. She started to play the piano aged 2 and spent her youth moving around New Jersey before settling in Scotch Plains until she was 18. Audrey spent her adolescence being homeschooled, working at her father's businesses, and attending church events.

When Assad was 18 her family moved to Florida and she spent the next six years there. At 19 she briefly attended college and supported herself with odd jobs while beginning her musical career, writing and composing songs for the first time. Assad spent the next five years playing at various venues performing original songs and covers.

Before the release of her debut album, Audrey released a three track taster EP called 'For Love Of You', this was a way of introducing people to Sparrow Records' newest female soloist. At the time Audrey was already well known to a number of popular Christian artists, having recorded a song with Jars of Clay for their album, sung vocals on several songs on Matt Maher's 'Alive Again' album, and had her song 'Winter Snow' appear on Chris Tomlin's Christmas album.

Her own debut album, 'The House You're Building', drew attention from CNN and was named Amazon.com's 'Best Christian Music of 2010', while iTunes awarded it 'Breakthrough Album of the Year' for the Christian & Gospel genre."It's so simple and yet so beautiful a picture, to know that my life is witnessed in all its frailty and wonder by God - and all of it, even my most secret suffering, matters. It really does."

Review of INHERITANCE
5 stars By Timothy Yap, Mar 04 2016
"Inheritance" is Assad at her creative and heartfelt best. This album of hymns and a few originals is brilliantly polyglot: here Assad gorgeously blends together the language and sounds of her liturgical high church traditions with the palatable expressions of a modern day coffee house singer. As a result, Assad has created a modern sounding hymnal with sonic threads of ancient sensibilities. Sure, hymn albums are very popular these days, but most artists only touch on the iceberg of hymnology recycling the same few hymns such as "It is Well" and "Amazing Grace" again and again. Assad avoids such frivolity; rather, she divulges into hymns that are more obscure but still rich in theology. Album opener "Ubi Caritas" is an example. An antiphon associated with the foot washing ritual of Maundy Thursday, "Ubi Caritas" is a gentle reminder that where true charity is, God is there too.

With "Holy, Holy, Holy," Assad turns this ancient worship piece into a Sarah McLachlan-esque slice of dreamy pop-folk with her ethereal phrasing accompanied by forceful percussions and echo-y backings. "Be Thou My Vision" unfolds like a movie with each scene moving us closer and closer to God.
