John Dickson is in top form in providing this apologetic for the historical Jesus through answering some of the most pressing questions like:

  • Who wrote the New Testament?

  • How soon after Christ was it written?

  • How do we know the story hasn't changed over the years?

  • Who decided which bits got into the New Testament and which bits didn't?

  • Did anyone else in Jesus' day write about him? Why didn't he write the message down himself?

Today there is renewed interest in and scepticism towards the historical basis of Christianity. "The Jesus Files" is soundly based on historical and New Testament scholarship, and presented in a readable way for the enquirer who wants answers to questions about the hot issue of the historical basis of the Christian faith.

The author takes us through what we can realistically know about the life of Jesus from ancient pagan and Jewish writings as well as NT and near contemporary Christian sources. The author argues that the gospels deserve to be read seriously.

An in-depth investigation into the history of Jesus, from his early beginnings to how he was viewed in the Enlightenment, the 20th Century, and beyond In this lovely full-color book, the question of how much anyone can really know about Jesus of Nazareth is addressed. From the Gospels to the word of modern-day theologians to historical record, all accounts are examined in minute detail in attempt to uncover the truth. By reviewing ancient evidence, interviewing leading experts, and setting out a robust historical method, the reliability or unreliability of different sources, interpretations, and arguments is clearly established. Christianity prides itself on being a historical religion. Here this pride is subjected to a very close scrutiny and it is shown both how vital this is and yet how different Jesus was from the way he is so often portrayed today.

A Very Convincing Read with Regard to Historical Evidence!
5 stars By Tony H., Feb 06 2015
The author, Dr John Dickson, is a Senior Research Fellow of Ancient History at Macquarie University, Sydney. As a qualified Professor he explains some of the techniques historian Professors use to validate the authenticity and historicity of texts. He uses his expertise in this area to present to the layperson in simple terms and with plenty of pictures the historical evidence for Jesus and the accuracy or authenticity of the bible. This is more than an interesting or fascinating read, it is a must read!

The only drawback, I'll concede, is that some of the content overlaps with two of his other books, "Jesus, a Short Life" and "The Christ Files". Don't let that put you off though, we can all do with a refresher from time to time on the historical evidence for Jesus and the accuracy and authenticity of the bible.

Interesting read.
4 stars By Laura, Jul 16 2014
This book was a great read, especially for the price. It looks at Jesus as a historical figure and the bible as a historical text, examining them only in the terms a historian would - the author concludes that both Jesus and the bible meet all historical criteria needed to treat them as 'real' things.
