A Helpful Treatment on Various Questions Relating to the Person of Jesus
4 stars By Dr. Bernard Low, Aug 02 2016
For anyone interested in the quest of the historical Jesus, this book by Thiede, a leading historian and theologian, is a must read. In a style that is readable, clear and scholarly, the late Professor Thiede explores these questions: (1) Did Jesus Really Exist? (2) How Do We Know the Stories About Jesus Are Actually True? (3) How was Jesus Born? (4) What Was Jesus' Place in Jewish Tradition? (5) Did Jesus Really Do Miracles? (6) Did Jesus Really Die on the Cross? (7) Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead? and, (8) Who Did Jesus Think He Was? Thiede presents the "liberal" and "modernist" answers to these questions and then weigh them against the historical and literary evidences. He concludes that Jesus is who He claimed He was - truly God and truly Man, not myth but Truth personified - and that the mosaic of His person has been carefully preserved in the New Testament writings. Reading Thiede's book is sure to strengthen one's confidence in the New Testament and shed interesting historical, cultural and textual light on various NT texts (e.g. why the Gospel passages on exorcism did originally say exorcism ought to be done by prayer and fasting, and not just by prayer alone). Highly recommended!
