Beginning with Jesus' birth, Ken Bailey leads you on a kaleidoscopic study of Jesus throughout the four Gospels. Bailey examines the life and ministry of Jesus with attention to the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, Jesus' relationship to women, and especially Jesus' parables. Through it all, Bailey employs his trademark expertise as a master of Middle Eastern culture to lead you into a deeper understanding of the person and significance of Jesus within his own cultural context. With a sure but gentle hand, Bailey lifts away the obscuring layers of modern Western interpretation to reveal Jesus in the light of his actual historical and cultural setting. This entirely new material from the pen of Ken Bailey is a must-have for any student of the New Testament. If you have benefited from Bailey's work over the years, this book will be a welcome and indispensable addition to your library. If you are unfamiliar with Bailey's work, this book will introduce you to a very old yet entirely new way of understanding Jesus.

A must read. I was blown Away at the first Chapter. He claims Jesus's birth was not In a lonely barn rejected by the "inn" keeper and he very well backs it up!! He covers women in the bible, beattidtudes, parables and more!!
AMAZING eye opening book for passages that have lost their meaning in the modern world.

It's as if you are there.....
5 stars By Miss D, Mar 11 2009
In reading this book I could picture myself amongst the crowds who watched and listened intently to Jesus' every word.

Bailey's book begins with the Christmas Story. The information he provides, even in this opening chapter, encourages you to re-read the Biblical accounts. Your eyes are opened up to details that could easily be overlooked or taken for granted. Suddenly certain words and sentences have a much richer meaning. The entire book is like this. It encourages you to read and understand the gospels not only from a literal view point but culturally.

This book also devotes significant time illustrating Jesus' view on women. Through specific parables, we are taught that despite the culture, Jesus did not see or treat women as inferior.

Kenneth Bailey's writing style combined with his knowledge of the region in which Jesus lived enables the reader to truly appreciate the gospels, not only in light of Biblical teaching but also in conjunction with the culture of the time.
