The Church has a problem with Judges, it is so earthy, puzzling, primitive and violent - so much so that the Church can barely stomach it. It falls under the category 'embarrassing scripture'. Such an attitude is, of course, wrong so Ralph Davis here makes Judges digestible by analyzing the major literary and theological themes discovered in each section, providing a 'theocentric' exposition.

Have you ever watched a T.V. program or read a newspaper article where a commentator clumsily illustrates his complete ignorance of Christianity and its claims How often have you rolled your eyes and immediately discounted what is being said saying to yourself Well why should I listen to them when they obviously havent got a clue How then can we expect to witness effectively to those of the Muslim faith if all that we know of Islam is picked up from passing references in the media This fascinating book provides Christians with a simple description of the origins of Islam what Muslims believe and how it affects their attitudes worldview everyday life and culture. Practical guidelines are given for relating to Muslims in a culturally appropriate way as well as for witnessing effectively and caring for converts.

wise and clear help for a tough Biblical book
4 stars By Steve N, Jun 04 2016
Like many people, I often feel a bit uncomfortable when reading the Book of Judges. It's a challenging read - and made more challenging with the noise of those who subscribe to the New Atheism position of seeing God as a moral monster in the Old Testament. I can understand their reasoning. But reading Judges in light of the rest of Scripture, and having the help of a wise, thoughtful and honest commentator like Dale Ralph Davis makes this book shine with the goodness of God and highlights the enormity of Jesus as the true light in this world.

Engaging and faithful
5 stars By Hoa, Apr 05 2016
Davis' commentary on the book of Judges has a rare blend of faithfulness to the text, faithfulness to the gospel, and readability. This book is not a dry academic commentary, but an engaging and readable guide through Judges. He takes the book section by section. Davis' does an excellent job of explaining the meaning of the text and showing how he comes to his conclusions, but he doesn't stop there. He goes on to show how these stories ultimately point to Christ, and shape our faith today. This is a must-read for anyone reading through Judges.
