Mitchell's Newest Romance Is Sure to Delight!

Ellis Eton has always felt she's been a disappointment to her stuffy, traditional Boston family. Her sights are set on something entirely different: Hollywood. Though she's captured the eye of Griffin Phillips, she knows that "dutiful wife" is one role she can't picture herself playing--even if he makes her head spin and her heart quicken. Besides, Ellis seems to make a mess of any situation, despite her good intentions. She's simply not worthy of an up-and-comer like Griff.

When a look-alike childhood friend begs Ellis for a favor, Ellis finds herself working shifts at the city telephone exchange. At first Ellis believes this will be the acting practice she needs to prepare for life in the movies, but the job is far more complicated than she'd ever imagined, and Ellis finds herself in her usual scrapes. After accidentally overhearing a call that makes her blood curdle, Ellis fears for Griff's safety. Then handsome policeman Jack Flanagan comes to the scene, adding to the mayhem. With her job on the line and her heart all a-muddle, Ellis unexpectedly discovers what might be her role of a lifetime.

unforgetable
5 stars By Ibu Guru, Apr 01 2015
I enjoyed reading this but found it made a lot more sense after I read the author's notes at the end. Very descriptive writing and I can imagine it would resonate with people who also have ADHD like Ellis.

fantastically funny
5 stars By sarah, May 21 2014
Set in the 1920s, ellis is an aspiring actress wanting to make it in Hollywood. But she lives in boston and is supposed to be going to college, marrying the right man and doing all the right things, just as those in her family for generations had done. But Ellis wants to break out of that. She feels her best skills lie in acting - in pretending to be other people. She just wants to be like everyone else, but feels like a failure. Instead of focusing on her college work, she often finds herself daydreaming and this leads her into trouble. Ellis goes from one hilarious situation to the next, taking the reader with her.
This is an entertaining story about a girl just trying to find where she fits in in the world. Ellis is a likeable character, and I especially appreciated the way the author skilfully injected thought-provoking topics alongside Ellis' humorous exploits and a dash of mystery. A fantastic read.
