Misfits Welcome

Matthew Barnett

Being a misfit does not disqualify you from a dynamic life-it prepares you for it.

Matthew Barnett knows a thing or two about misfits.

As founder of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, a twenty-four-hour church that ministers to thirty-five thousand hurting people a week, Barnett has seen a little of everything. Gangsters, addicts, orphans, taggers, cutters, the sick, the suffering, the hopeless-all the misfits of the world come through the Dream Center's doors in search of hope.

But when Barnett first arrived in LA, it was he who felt like the misfit. In Misfits Welcome, he shares the simple, life-changing lesson he has learned from twenty years of ministering to the forgotten: Being a misfit prepares you to do the work of the Lord.

Have you found yourself in a jarring new era of life? Have your circumstances deviated drastically from your plans? Maybe you've felt like a misfit all your life, or maybe you're still haunted by yesterday's mistakes. Whatever the case, rejoice! It is at your most broken that you are most ready for what God has in store.

Misfits Welcome is not just about embracing the misfits around us-it is about embracing the misfits within us and using them for the glory of God.

Meet the Author

Matthew Barnett

Matthew Barnett, founder of the Los Angeles Dream Center, best-selling author and pastor of one of America's fasting growing churches, is one of the most dynamic voices God is using in Christianity today. He is the son of Pastor Tommy Barnett, best-selling author and pastor of, what Time Magazine considers, one of the three largest churches in America.

The Dream Center houses close to 600 people who are being rehabilitated for the glory of God. Through its 40 services and nearly 200 ministries they reach over 40,000 people a week with food and many other services that meet the spiritual and physical needs of the local community. As of September 2003, there have been over 150 Dream Centers launched around the world.

In 2001, the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel's Angelus Temple united with the Dream Center and Pastor Barnett is now the senior pastor of both with a weekly congregation in excess of 7,000.

Pastor Matthew has won numerous awards including the Religious Heritage Award and the church has been recognised several times for its contribution to the community. Former President George W. Bush has personally endorsed Ps Barnett with highest regards for his achievements.

Pastor Barnett is married to Caroline and they have one daughter, Mia Aimee and a son, Caden West.

A Book That Shows How Being a Misfit Does Not Disqualify One From a Dynamic Life But Instead Prepares You For It!
4 stars By Dr. Bernard Low, Apr 16 2015
The author, who is pastor of Angelus Temple and the Dream Center in Los Angeles, California, has written a book that ought to be read by every pastor and every member in the pew. Not many "respectable" churches these days would boast of having a staff team or congregation whose members are formerly drug addicts, prostitutes, gangsters, cutters, orphans, the homeless, failures and misfits in other kinds of ways. Yet Barnett's church and staff team are made up of precisely many such people who are often neglected by churches. The book contains inspiring and heart-warming accounts of various misfits who have experienced God's grace and the church's love and whose lives have been touched and changed and become useful to reach out to other misfits. Although Barnett's own life and ministry has been deeply enriched by these people, he is also very open that ministry to misfits can be messy at times. Reading this book, I cannot but be encouraged to know that God is looking for people who don't have it all together but are willing to let Him take their lives and run with them. Not only that, the author also reminds us that there is life after giving up, after throwing in the towel, and after falling down all because God is the God of second changes and gives us another shot at obedience. He meets our mess with His mercy and our failures with His forgiveness. This book is a great reminder of what redeeming and restoring grace is all about.
