Honest and well produced
4 stars By Rebecca Abbott, Apr 12 2007
One of the most powerful images of the 20th century is that of a tiny nun, swathed in white and blue. This DVD tells the story of how Mother Teresa - a simple woman with a heart devoted to God -changed the course of history.

Instead of a romantic Hollywood version, this film is produced by an Italian director, and honestly depicts Mother Teresa's struggles and sheer determination in carrying out her God-appointed work among the 'poorest of the poor' in India.

The film begins in 1950, with a Catholic Priest sent from the Vatican to investigate Mother Teresa and her request to start a new congregation on the streets of Calcutta, called the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa's childhood in Macedonia is skillfully woven into the story, with sensitive attention given to her parents' influence and her calling to become a nun at the age of 18.

The action then returns to Mother Teresa's desire to leave the convent in Calcutta and serve the homeless and sick on the streets, because Jesus has told her to. Despite opposition from within the Catholic Church and locals of other religions, as well as a lack of funds, Mother Teresa's determination, compassion and faith are strong enough to achieve the seemingly impossible.

This movie is well produced and creatively filmed, with many poignant and touching moments. Olivia Hussey's performance as Mother Teresa is heartfelt and believable, as she sensitively portrays Teresa?s conviction, compassion and boldness. Importantly, the driving force behind all Mother Teresa's actions - her faith in God - is central to this film and has not been watered down in any way.

As well as providing valuable insights into the background and vocation of this remarkable woman, MOTHER TERESA is a film that will challenge all Christians to wholeheartedly follow the example of Christ by striving to bring love and hope to our fallen world.
