Erasmus was born in 1469 so you might not be surprised that few have heard of him today. To his contemporaries this would be unthinkable. His life shows how God can use someone who became an enemy of Christianity to stimulate one of its greatest periods of growth and spirituality.

Erasmus was born in 1469 so you might not have heard of him; to his contemporaries this would be unthinkable. To them he was a modern Socrates whose learning and wisdom had not been equalled for a thousand years 'a kind of divine being sent down to us from heaven'.
University of Toronto Press's 'Collected Works of Erasmus' will extend to 86 volumes. This includes his letters. Erasmus corresponded on a massive scale all over Western Europe: including kings, popes, professors, humanists and many more - anyone who was anyone at some stage penned the words 'My Dear Erasmus.'
The march of history has not been kind to Erasmus. In spite of his phenomenal achievements Luther, concealed behind the Reformation, has eclipsed him.
Yet the influence of Erasmus led to that Reformation. His life and work shows how God can use someone not in sympathy with the church to stimulate one of its greatest periods of growth and spirituality.

This Biography of Erasmus is Essential Reading
5 stars By Dr. Bernard Low, Mar 10 2016
The author, a former missionary to China and Java, has done the Christian Church a great favor by writing this biography of Erasmus, the great Renaissance scholar. This biography is based on "The Collected Works of Erasmus" published by the University of Toronto Press, especially 11 volumes (out of the 86) which record his correspondences up to 1525. From these correspondences, the reader gets a glimpse into this great man who was multi-talented and highly gifted. Erasmus was not only a classical scholar but also a linguist (he mastered Hebrew, Greek and Latin in addition to his natives languages), a textual critic, a translator, a prolific author of many books and pamphlets, a tireless correspondent, an international traveler, an enthusiastic student, and an invaluable teacher. Amongst his most significant works were the Greek New Testament which he edited from extant manuscripts and paraphrases of some NT books. It is noteworthy that Erasmus was able to accomplish so much in his life-time despite his ill health and frail body. Although Erasmus remained a Roman Catholic all his life, he was not blind to the weaknesses, faults, abuses, excesses and superstitions which he found in the Catholic Church of his day. He sought and worked for reforms, was sympathetic to Luther's reforms but would not break away from the Church. That said, Erasmus' works had paved the way for the Reformation and he should be better known!
