Meet the Authors

Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine was born to a Catholic mother and a pagan father on November 13, 354, at Tagasta, near Algiers. He studied Latin literature and later taught rhetoric in Rome and Milan. He originally joined the Manicheans, a religious sect, but grew unhappy with some of their philosophies. He soon turned to Christianity and was baptized in 386. One of Augustine's major goals was a single, unified church. He was ordained a priest in 391 and appointed Bishop of Hippo, in Roman Africa, in 396, His writings and arguments with other sects include the Donatists and the Pelagians. On the Trinity, The City of God, and On Nature and Grace are some of his important writings. Confessions, which is considered his masterpiece, is an autobiographical work that recounts his restless youth and details the spiritual experiences that led him to Christianity. Many of Augustine's ideas, such as those concerning sin and predestination, became integral to the doctrines of the Church. Augustine died on August 28, 430AD.

John Bunyan

John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose. In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years.

Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City; Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners; and the most famous, The Pilgrims Progress.

After his release, he became the pastor of a church in Bedord, England and continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War; Bunyan's Visions of Heaven and Hell and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

John Foxe (1516-1587) was a professor at Oxford, then a minister in London before being forced to flee to Europe when Queen Mary came to power. While in Europe he wrote this classic and published it after returning to England when Queen Elizabeth took the throne.

Brother Lawrence

Brother Lawrence (c.1614?91) was a lay brother in a Carmelite monastery. He is best remembered for the simple, yet profound, insights into the spiritual life contained in The Practise of the Presence of God.
