Now in its third edition and featuring a new foreword by New York Times best-selling author David Platt, pastor Mark Dever&'s classic book is not an instruction manual for church growth. Rather, it is a wise pastor&'s recommendation for how to assess the health of a church using nine crucial qualities often neglected by many of today&'s congregations. Church leaders and church members alike will resonate with the principles outlined here, breathing new life and health into the church at large. In this newly revised edition, fresh arguments have been added (for example on expositional preaching, about the nature of the gospel, on complementarianism), illustrations have been updated, appendices have been changed, and cover has been improved.

Well-rounded introduction to a healthy church
4 stars By Hoa, Oct 21 2016
This book gives a broad overview to nine areas where the modern church often lacks biblical balance. Dever helpfully spends a chapter on each before providing some thoughts on practical application in the appendices and further reading. Firmly rooted in biblical truth, this book is a good broad introduction.

Foundational understanding of the church
5 stars By Aaron, Sep 05 2016
Dever writes a thorough and biblical volume on 9 marks that he considers are crucial for a healthy church. Particularly helpful was his defense of expositional preaching, addressing common misconceptions regarding the gospel and evangelism, as well as his discussion on 'democracy' in his chapter on biblical church leadership.
I also appreciated the appendix section where Dever wisely advises against the immediately application of church discipline in churches where it is not practiced currently - but instead to shepard the church towards it first. I feel that this train of thought might also be applicable for other marks that readers may discover might be lacking in their own church.
This is a highly foundational read on the church and I'd recommend it to those who are in ministry, but also to believers who want to learn more about what makes a 'healthy' church.
