Rated M, 96 minutes
This stirring film takes up where Chariots of Fire left off. Having won gold for Britain at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Scottish athlete Eric Liddell (Joseph Fiennes) returns to his birthplace China, to follow in the footsteps of his missionary parents. Liddell's life there, serving as a schoolteacher and starting a family, is overshadowed by the Japanese invasion in 1937, which brings great suffering to the Chinese people as another World War looms. Liddell and his friend Xu Niu, a street-smart resistance fighter, recognise the increasing danger, so Liddell sends his wife, Florence, and their two daughters to safety in Canada. Duty-bound, Liddell stays to minister to the civilian victims, continuing to serve and inspire even after being imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp. In conditions of incredible hardship, Liddell's example of patient endurance, love, and selfless dedication to the needs of others will leave an immortal legacy of hope - one that continues to this day.

Unflinching faith and fearlessness under fire
5 stars By Aaron, Sep 06 2018
What will stick with me after seeing this film is the way Liddell confidently stood on God's side at all times. This is not a stand up and cheer Christian film or a story that ends with an altar call. It's the true story of a man who endured intense hardship. Through it all, he prays and quotes scripture in the face of injustice, gently and respectfully. Eric Liddell lived an admirable life of faith that always sought the betterment of others before himself.

So sad
3 stars By Chloe M, Aug 30 2018
I bought this cos as a child I grew up with watching a video of the film "The Chariots of Fire", which I enjoyed. Also, I bought this film cos I appreciate the talented main actor, Joseph Fiennes who delivered 5-star acting and film presence, but he was let down by parts of the film-making. I've seen films that had much worse film-making. It mainly had good film-making and acting. There were a few moments I felt something was not quite right with the film-making with the story-telling near the start and end. I wanted to hear an example of his praying, to better feel his connection with God, to believe that more. If u like war films you'll probably love this. I respect the importance of learning from war etc but I am not a fan of war films. Some films can deliver war topics better than others. I don't know how accurate the film is and I hope my Dad won't be too disappointed. I don't think I could watch it a second time. It did challenge my faith and build my faith, but in a sad way cos I didn't feel so inspired or motivated. I had to think about some of the Christian topics during and after the film, so as to try to digest the challenging topics and not just be sad, but build faith

Very disappointed
1 stars By Dom Fiocco, Aug 01 2018
While claiming to be based on true events, I found this portrayal of Eric Liddell empty of his true Christian faith and not an accurate representation of his life, suffering and death inside the Japanese internment camp. Joseph Fiennes delivers a solid performance as Eric the school teacher and Olympic athlete, but unless you knew his story, you would be left with the impression that Eric's faith was in "humanity" rather than in the Lord Jesus Christ and his saving gospel. This movie also assumes a fair amount of background knowledge regarding the war situation in China at this point in history. As one who has studied his life and given a detailed talk on Eric Liddell, I would point viewers to read "Pure Gold" by David McCasland. Watch this movie to better understand the hardships that Eric and others endured during the war, but not to find the hope and purpose Eric knew in God his Saviour.

Disappointing
2 stars By Hugh, May 23 2018
Eric Liddell was a strong Christian, and a depiction of his faith in this period of his life could have made for a compelling movie. Unfortunately his Christian faith is downplayed (although not totally absent) in the movie. Adding to this criticism the storyline in general not overly strong, although it does give a good picture of the latter part of his life. The acting and cinematography are reasonable.

What sacrifice!
5 stars By Rochelle, NSW, May 09 2018
What words are adequate for a life lived surrendered to the plan of God!
Eric Liddell's story resounds so many parts of the life Jesus taught that we should live.He won and received acclaim from man at the Olympics in 1924, this part of the story can be seen in the movie Chariots of Fire, then returned to China. He continues as a Missionary, as his parents were. He served as a school teacher and started his own family. When Japan invades China Liddell sends his wife and two daughters to safety in Canada. Liddell and his friend Xu Niu minister to the Chinese as the danger increases in the area.
Liddell continues to teach and help those around him when imprisoned in a Japanese war camp. Even in his own weakness and failing health, Liddell requests a race to try and secure medication to save a man's life. The horror of what happens is heart wrenching in it's unfairness. Liddell's love and selfless dedication to the needs of those around him leave you breathless and inspired.
What a cheer must have gone up as he received his reward 'stored up' where it would not perish!
