Imagine if there was a way that people could grow in their knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ - a way that returned gospel growth to the everyday fabric of personal relationship, rather than relying on church-run programs. That guided people in a deeper, more meaningful way than an event, program or class could possibly do - guided on an individual basis by someone who cared for them personally.

What is this way? What is this activity that is so simple and so universal that it meets the discipleship needs of very different people at very different stages of discipleship, even non-Christians?

We call it reading the Bible one-to-one.

But what exactly is reading the Bible one-to-one? Why should we do it? Who is it for?

In One-to-One Bible Reading: a simple guide for every Christian, David Helm answers these important questions.

Evangelism that Works.
5 stars By Daniel, Mar 24 2017
David Helm has written a desperately needed book on evangelism.

The format of the book is simple, and it can be read in under 2 hours. Helm begins by showing us that one on one Bible reading is both wanted and necessary. It is needed for non Christians who will be exposed to the life giving Word of God. It is needed for new Christians who need to continue in their faith. It is also needed for training mature Christians for gospel ministry.

Helm then adopts two different methods of reading through the Bible with people. The Swedish method, and the COMA method, which in my opinion is the most useful.

C - context (What happened before this account).
O - observations (What observations do you see in the text).
M - meaning (What is the meaning of the text, how does it point to Christ).
A - application (What is the call on your life).

Using this method, Helm then gives plenty of different books in the Bible, as well as the sections to read them in, for non Christians, new Christians and mature Christians.

I know that this method of evangelism has taken off in the UK, and I can see it doing the same here. For the main reason that people love relationships. So invite a friend, go grab a 2for1 burger at burger urge, bring your Bible, and have fun!

God bless.

Simple and effective
4 stars By Raj, Jan 23 2017
What a breath of fresh air. Imagine discipleship was as simple as just cracking open the scriptures, letting God speak, and learning together? This book paints that picture but with a lot of practical help and guidance as the practice has it's dangers. I imagine this was the feel of Wesleyan roots - just meeting together to meet God in His Word.

Must read guide
5 stars By Aaron, Dec 28 2016
This is a fantastic little book that helps to explain the what, why and how of one to one bible reading. I found this booklet helpful in breaking down all the aspects of one to one bible reading such as who to do one to one bible reading with, how a one to one bible reading session might run and what book of the bible to read through and why. Helm also provides readers with 2 one to one bible reading frameworks, and shows how these frameworks can be used in face of different genres of the bible.

Overall, this is a fantastic book that can guide Christians as they read the bible with one another.

Brief but powerful!
5 stars By Life, Sep 06 2016
The other reviewer, Liz, was spot on! This book is brief but impacting, with no fluff! Chapter 10 was my favourite - how to read different genres. This helps a lot in the way I read personally but also in making some of those more awkward readings with friends (genealogies and such) fun, informative and challenging. It's not 'normal' to just read the bible with other Christians in my culture so I'm hope to change that.

A must!
5 stars By Liz P, Oct 23 2012
It's hard to know whether to call One To One Bible Reading a book, or a booklet. The text covers less than seventy pages (plus extensive appendicies) and is set out in brief, easy to read chapters. Part of the book's brevity is because the author truly believes that the Bible is accessible, and doesn't need any special talents, study or extensive preparation to read. It is a book and can be read like a book, albeit the most important and valuable book.
David Helm takes the seemingly-daunting task of reading the Bible with someone you know, and makes it seem easy. Because, really, it should be easy. Not every part of the Bible is simple to read and understand, but reading the Bible, and chatting with someone else about what the passage is saying, that's not hard.
I found the book encouraging. It has given me some simple tools to use with my children when reading the Bible, which will (hopefully) enrich our Bible reading time. It has also encouraged me to consider other adults in my life who I could read the Bible with.
Even if you a not a "reader", I encourage you to take a look at this accessible and inexpensive book. It won't take long to read and will hopefully encourage to you read the Bible more, especially with other people in your life.
