Paperback

In One Uncommon Woman,Dulcie Lampard has written not only her mother's biography, but a moving testimonial to the love which can exist between mother and daughter. Dulcie tells her mother's story with a welcome objectivity and a keen eye for the rich canvas of everyday life. Set in Western Australia, the biography traverses almost a century of history and most of the Western Australian countryside. We read of two world wars and how they affected the Hill family as well as wider Western Australian society, the 1983 flooding of Gogo Station, the falling to earth of Skylab and the plight of Lindy Chamberlain, to mention only a few events recounted by Dulcie in her telling of her mother's story.

Common Experience
4 stars By Julie, Feb 28 2015
Dulcie Lampard beautifully empathises with our common everyday experience in her presentation of her mother's life. Pearl was a woman of spunk and intelligence yet had a great loyalty to her family. We see her character form from a young age when she became the main carer of her younger brothers and sisters after her mother died when she was 12. She was of the 'T' (traditional) generation, letting go of her scholarship to Methodist Ladies College in Western Australia to find work when her father fell on hard times. Despite this great disappointment she never ceased to read and cultivate a great interest in all things - domestic pursuits, farming, politics and many other interests. She was also a woman of humour and warmth. The reader is pleased when she finds the love of her life and is able to leave her father's home to make her own with the man she marries. Pearl makes a place in your heart and takes you back to yesteryear in a wonderfully nostalgic way. I highly recommend it to those who are interested in everyday lives that count.

This is work to rival A B Facey's "A Fortunate
Life".
