A Frightening, Inspiring True Story of a WWII Hero and His Miraculous Survival at Sea

July 30, 1945: After transporting uranium for the atomic bomb that would soon be dropped on Hiroshima, the USS Indianapolis headed unaccompanied toward a small island in the South Pacific. At 12:14 a.m., she was struck by two Japanese torpedoes and rolled over, sinking into the ocean.

Marine survivor Edgar Harrell vividly describes the horrors of being plagued by dehydration, exposure, saline poisoning, and sharks. This is a story of courage, ingenuity, and faith in God's providence in the midst of the greatest catastrophe at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving the Terror of the Ocean
4 stars By Sean, Sep 24 2014
This biography is a harrowing tale of survival in what I would call the most terrifying circumstances. Edgar Harrell's story begins with his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, and he serves aboard the USS Indianapolis, one of the proudest ships in the American Navy. The Indy delivers top secret components for the the atomic bomb, but on the next leg of her journey, disaster strikes. Almost 1000 men are left bobbing in the Pacific Ocean with no food, water, shelter and not enough life jackets for them all. For the next 5 days their numbers dwindle as sharks, exposure and thirst take their toll.

Harrell's story is amazing; he vividly relives the horrifying hours he spent trying to survive. Throughout the ordeal, his faith is tested, but he knows that God is with him through it all, whether the end comes to life or to death. Recalling and sharing Scripture to comfort himself and his fellow sailors and marines, Harrell boldly serves the Lord in his darkest hour.

I found Harrell's story easy to devour, and though I often wished for more historical details, I particularly enjoyed the way he saturated his book with Scripture and spiritual reflection. I found myself reading the heartfelt words of a man whose life was entirely in the hands of his God. If you read this, you'll be inspired at how the peace of God can comfort in the most terrifying times we may ever face
