When Carley Marek takes a hiatus from her job, she leaves Texas and visits her friend Lillian in Amish country, Pennsylvania. Carley isn't there long when she meets Lillian's charming - but shunned - brother-in-law, Dr Noah Stoltzfus. When Lillian's stepson is stricken with a life-threatening disease, Noah is forbidden to intervene, but he resolves to do whatever it takes to save the boy's life. Carley finds herself caught in the middle of her feelings for Noah and her loyalty to Lillian. And to further complicate matters, everyone around her is talking about God--a God she doesn't know and who appears to be punishing her for her past mistakes. When her hiatus is up, Carley must make a life-changing decision: stay and face the path that is set before her, or flee and leave the only love she's ever known.

Carley has given up chasing her dreams. Now her dreams are chasing her.

Carley Marek experiences culture shock when she visits her friend Lillian's family on their farm deep in Amish country. She'll get an article out of the visit--and maybe some of Lillian's newfound peace will somehow rub off on her.

Just when Carley is getting used to the quiet nature of the Plain community, Lillian and Samuel's son falls ill. But the local doctor who can offer the most help has been shunned by the community and forbidden to intervene.

As David's condition deteriorates, Dr. Noah determines to do whatever it takes to save the boy's life. Carley is caught in the middle--drawn to Noah, wanting to be helpful in the crisis--and confused by all their talk about a God she neither knows nor trusts.

Carley must decide what in life is worth pursuing . . . and what to do when she's pursued by a love she never expected.

Great Reading
4 stars By Narelle, Mar 03 2010
'Plain Pursuit'is a romance novel set on a farm in Amish country. It all begins when journalist Carley Marek's life is in turmoil and her boss suggests she take some personal leave. Carley decides to visit her friend Lillian whom she went to school with. Lillian has given up a life of high heels and makeup to live the Amish way of life with her husband and children.

There is family tragedy and relationship strain and secrets in this great novel. Carley meets and falls in love with the local Doctor, who has some dark secrets of his own to reveal. Carley's own life is forever changed, she does not become Amish herself, but finds love and family and we are left with the feeling that she will live 'happily ever after'.

Beth Wiseman has a beautiful writing style. She weaves God and religion into the story as Carley searches for answers in her life and her friend Lillian has found a relationship with God which she freely talks about and answers Carleys questions.

I have never read anything about The Amish before and was really drawn to their simple, faith filled way of life (not the Amish language though!). I read 'Plain Pursuit' in hours as I could not put it down and recommend it highly to others looking for an interesting romance novel.
