Tim Keller's Counterfeit Gods located our main personal and social problems in 'idols of the heart'; this is essentially its sequel, a very practical book on how to dismantle those idols and bring about deep and permanent changes in our character and behaviour. Tim begins by focusing on the means for growth. The basic tool is prayer, including reflective prayer that expands self-knowledge; meditative prayer that makes beliefs real to the heart and changes personal identity; confession that cleanses the conscience and reshapes the affections; and communal prayer and worship that seals us into a life-changing community which renews human relationships. After exploring these means for change, Tim examines the gospel virtues - the specific changes in character that these measures can produce, and ends with an incredibly practical, workable section on daily, weekly, and monthly spiritual exercises and practices. This is a book that will teach you to pray - and in doing so, will change your life.

A fantastic theological and practical book on prayer
5 stars By Aaron, Feb 08 2017
Keller writes a very thorough book on Christian prayer. He gradually walks the readers from the why's and what's of prayer, towards the when's and how's. In doing so, developing a sound theology of prayer and then the biblical application of prayer. What I found particularly helpful was the well developed biblical perspectives on prayer; how Keller drew from theologians of the past, such as Calvin, Augustine and Luther, to consider their perspective and practice of prayer; and the provision of 'templates' on how readers might consider applying prayer in their daily lives.

This is a fantastic book, and I would highly recommend it to everyone!

A challenging and complex book on the notion of "prayer". Keller recounts the bible understanding of the notion of prayer and also the writings of influential christian leaders including Martin Luther on the meaning of prayer. Keller argues of the importance of prayer being based on biblical meanings of prayer and also examines the differences between prayer and meditation. An essential read on prayer.

Best Prayer Book I've read
5 stars By Julz, Nov 11 2015
This is the best prayer book I've read so far. It is biblical and not just based on the author's subjective experience of prayer. It is also comprehensive, perfect balance of doctrinal and practical aspects of prayer. The first part of the book tries to define what prayer is, and goes deeper into the how to. There is an emphasis on prayer guided by God's Word, turning your meditations of the Scripture into prayers. What I like about this book is that it has the chapter which draws the experience of prayer from the church's fathers like St. Augustine and Martin Luther, which has really blessed me.
