In these pages, New York Times bestselling author Shauna Niequist invites you to consider the landscape of your own life, and what it might look like to leave behind the pressure to be perfect and begin the life-changing practice of simply being present, in the middle of the mess and the ordinariness of life.

As she puts it: "A few years ago, I found myself exhausted and isolated, my soul and body sick. I was tired of being tired, burned out on busy. And, it seemed almost everyone I talked with was in the same boat: longing for connection, meaning, depth, but settling for busy.

"I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, writer, and I know all too well that settling feeling. But over the course of the last few years, I've learned a way to live, marked by grace, love, rest, and play. And it's changing everything.

"Present Over Perfect is an invitation to this journey that changed my life. I'll walk this path with you, a path away from frantic pushing and proving, and toward your essential self, the one you were created to be before you began proving and earning for your worth."

Written in Shauna's warm and vulnerable style, this collection of essays focuses on the most important transformation in her life, and maybe yours too: leaving behind busyness and frantic living and rediscovering the person you were made to be. Present Over Perfect is a hand reaching out, pulling you free from the constant pressure to perform faster, push harder, and produce more, all while maintaining an exhausting image of perfection.

Shauna offers an honest account of what led her to begin this journey, and a compelling vision for an entirely new way to live: soaked in grace, rest, silence, simplicity, prayer, and connection with the people that matter most to us.

Write Your Own Review
Topical Issue
2 stars By Lauren Watt, Nov 05 2018
This book is a collection of blog posts (not essays as the blurb suggests) reflecting on how life has changed for the author. I really appreciate the topic - working too hard and neglecting family, relationships and health is a big issue for much of our western culture. The book is easy to read and is an encouragement as to the benefits of taking life slower, but is written from a very personal perspective. For this reason it felt like I was watching someone else enjoy life, and struggled a little with how that could translate into my own context. Some of the entries were a little repetitive and I could not find any perceivable any growth or movement across the six sections. I would have loved if Shauna included some of the biblical inspiration behind her posts and what practical things she found helpful during her transition. Maybe reflecting on the process of change, rather than primarily the end results.

An enjoyable journey to being more present.
5 stars By CChoy, Feb 23 2018
Strap yourself in for a journey, one that will have you question everything you have valued and placed first in your life up until now. Shauna helped me navigate from a place where only perfection validated my very existence to a new destination- one that led me to the peaceful streams my spirit was longing for. I have learned to place value not in my perfection, but in God and His desire for me to be present in every moment of my life. This book will help you
to evaluate how you are living your life, and will gently guide you to greener pastures where you can begin to enjoy every moment of everyday, no matter how mundane it may seem to others. Only Jesus is perfect, let us cling to Him as we choose to be more present in the lives that He has blessed us with. A great read.

Much more than just a memoir
4 stars By Darryl Eyb, Feb 07 2018
Throughout its pages Niequist recounts story upon story to uncover what lies at the heart of her journey - there must be something more in life than endless striving, travel, and speaking opportunities. The crux of Present Over Perfect is Niequist's personal account of discovering a sense of worth, purpose, and place, by deliberately slowing down and being available for her family. Along the way, she wrestles with striving to meet other's expectations and the temptation of 'working' for God's love. On this second point, Niequist writes: "It's about rejecting the myth that everyday is a new opportunity to prove our worth, and about the truth that our worth is inherent, given by God, not earned by our hustling" (p. 105.)
The power of Niequist's book lies in the way it takes all threads of life, relational, professional, and spiritual, and filters them through the lens of finding our value based on who we are rather than what we do. It is this multi-faceted view that brings real beauty to the book and implores the reader to ask whether their life is based on meeting others expectations, and drives us toward a life of being rather than doing.

Refreshing
5 stars By Jacqueline, Jan 07 2017
This is a refreshing book to read. It is written in an easy style and has short chapters, so if you are super busy like Shauna was, it is easy to fit reading it into short moments.
Shauna shares from her heart and very vulnerably about her life of busyness and stress and how she changed this. I loved her honesty. I loved that she gives hope yet shares how it is not an easy or instant journey to change. This is a very encouraging book to read.

A beautiful book
4 stars By Laura, Dec 15 2016
This book explores the idea of simply slowing down, sitting in silence and embracing the calm. It speaks a deep and well thought out message of peace for weary, overburdened souls. The first few chapters need a little perseverance to really embrace the style and topic, but it is more than worth the effort!
