Have Christians become so preoccupied with the major sins of our society that we have lost sight of our need to deal with our own more subtle sins? Jerry Bridges returns to his trademark theme of holiness and addresses a dozen clusters of specific "acceptable" sins that we tend to tolerate in ourselves - such as jealousy, anger, pride, unthankfulness, and judgmentalism.

Jerry writes not from a height of spiritual accomplishment but from the trenches of his own battles with sin. In his admonitions, Jerry offers a message of hope in the profound mercy of the gospel and the transforming grace of God as the means to overcoming our subtle sins.

If you lead a small group or Bible class, don't miss the companion discussion guide for this important book.

A convicting but great read
5 stars By Angus, Nov 01 2016
A wonderful and convicting read. The central thrust of this book is that there are sins that we tolerate; that there are behaviors, thoughts and emotions that are displeasing to God but that we do not give a second thought. An underlying and implicit joy of reading this book is that it highlights how holy and how good God is, and how good his plan for our lives is. This in turn puts into sharp focus our need for Christ, and that despite our sin, respectable or not, we are redeemed in him.

Unbalanced
2 stars By Lisa, Mar 02 2015
This book is very effective in illustrating our sin and misery, bringing us to our knees before the Lord. I am only giving it two stars though, to make a point. I felt very strongly that Jerry Bridges didn't tie in God's Grace and left us feeling flat. We aren't capable of doing any good and all our good works are defiled with what he calls respectable sins, perhaps in our thoughts or our motives or our pride. This is very true. It is important for us as Christians to acknowledge our sin or we would not clearly see our need for a Savior. Some chapters left me feeling completely hopeless because my sins were accurately identified but my comfort and hope in the Lord was not reinforced. We have a member of our bible study group who suffers with depression and anxiety. In such a case, the chapter about anxiety accurately points a finger at the sin but leaves the sinner in the dark. There has to be a balance between the recognition of our sin and the comfort in our salvation and this balance was often not reached.

Confronting but encouraging
5 stars By Carla, Dec 09 2014
Our home group studied this book recently with the accompanying study guide and it was so helpful. Jerry Bridges is excellent at pointing out how some of the thoughts and attitudes we expect to have as part of modern society are in fact sinful and rebellious against God. "Everybody does it" or "everybody's like that" just don't cut it when God calls us to holiness, and Jerry Bridges encourages us to recognise the sins and lean on God's grace in overcoming them.

Thought provoking
5 stars By Eleanor, Aug 12 2013
This book confronts the issues of sins that have slide under the radar is today's society. Bridges thoroughly examines a list of individual 'respectable' sins, and works through dealing with each one. Recommended read to all willing to be confronted with truth!

Challenging and Confronting
5 stars By Elizabeth, Aug 06 2013
'Respectable Sins' challenges us as readers to live Christ in every aspect of our lives- not just when we are in our churches, bible studies or Christian university groups. Bridges exposes the darkness of human nature by writing in depth about the ugliness of sin. In this book, he writes especially on those which we hide or overlook- ones we consider 'less important' or as the title suggests, 'respectable sins'. He reminds us that sin, to God, is sin and there is no scale for God and to represent the glorious image of God, we too have to remember this standard and live by it. Bridges consistently reminds us in each chapter to confront our sinful deeds and thoughts, and seek the Holy Spirit, asking Him to bear fruit in our lives (Gal.5:22-23) and transform our lives. Definitely a great read and worth the 14.99!
