Jonathan Knight argues that the book Revelat ion, part of the New Testament, was written as a warning to Christians, living in an Asian urban setting, to guard their morals and not as a warning of a coming cataclysmic event. '

- Publisher This reading of Revelation explains the text as John's response to the problem of social accommodation in the churches of Asia Minor. Knight works from the hypothesis, now increasingly argued in scholarly circles, that there was no persecution of the Christians by Domitian at the end of the first century CE, and explains the references to martyrdom in the Apocalypse as mainly symbolic. Knight argues that John is creating awareness of a crisis in the text in order to call his readers to a stricter pattern of behaviour than Paul had allowed when writing to the Corinthians. Knight proceeds through the Apocalypse chapter by chapter and concludes with a section on the main theological ideas of Revelation.
