This book is largely the story of two characters, one who is a preacher who is down on his luck but has kept going through faith until he takes on a job at a supermax prison, which he struggles to find meaning in where he has been placed and the good he can do. The other main character is a young man who has made one bad decision after another, who ultimately finds himself on death row after committing a murder that didn't have to happen. The comparison between and drawing together of these two characters results in a compelling, if at times slower paced story that focusses on redemption and concludes with a depiction of the greatest price that has ever been paid.
