About "Sacred Reading"
Many today are asking how they can benefit from the ancient Christian teachers of spiritual wisdom. Sacred Reading offers a valuable entry point to both the content & the methods of reading sacred texts. This book is a bold & engaging examination of the Western tradition of lectio divina, the spiritual & prayerful approach to the reading of sacred texts, particularly the Bible. Michael Casey writes exquisitely - & with astonishing learning - about this ancient technique of prayerful reading. Lectio divina is much more than a way to comprehend words on a page. When practiced properly, sacred reading expands into a comprehensive spiritual approach to living. It is a method used to apply the teachings of sacred texts to help the reader live closer to God & to sharpen one's ethical conscience. Casey offers fascinating insights into how this prayerful experience can be sustained & invigorated by the techniques of sacred reading - techniques distilled from the author's deep acquaintance with the Bible & the ancient books of Western spirituality. Casey shows that lectio divina belongs not just to the privacy of the study, but rather is a way of serving God & of living a fully spiritual life.
