A passionate story for anyone on life's journey
5 stars By Renee Black, Aug 07 2017
SAM is the sensitive, real and beautifully expressed story of Kath and her family's journey with Sam, her son, who as a child is diagnosed with chronic neutropenia. SAM is the story of a mother's courage and perseverance to advocate for her child, to ensure he receives accurate and effective medical assistance to enable him to live life in the abundance of all God has for him. SAM is the story of the sanctity of life.
Underlying their story is a family's journey of faith and love; faith in God as the foundation for their narrative and a deep love for one another. Such has empowered them to walk their challenging journey with a sense of purpose and deep joy, whilst welcoming others with compassion and generosity into their story. But SAM is a very human story, and Kath shares the rawness and pain of the challenges and she reminds us of the heart-ache we so often hold for those we love, and for those we have loved and now lost.
Indeed, SAM is a gift of wisdom, hope and inspiration for those with a child with a chronic illness. But the truths and reflections are for anyone on the journey of life. SAM is Kath's loaf shared graciously; an invitation for us to embrace and treasure every moment of life as a precious gift.

An insightful, honest and inspirational story for all
5 stars By Emma-Jane Anderson, Aug 07 2017
Insightful, honest, and inspirational, 'Sam' is a beautiful and emboldening story of one family's journey with chronic illness.

'Sam' tells the tale of the Henry family, centralising on the diagnosis and management of their youngest child's rare blood disorder: neutropenia.
Kathryn Henry pens a raw and personal narrative, inviting each reader in closer to walk in step with her and her family through their struggles and their victories in the face of chronic illness. It's a story that does not hold back and, as a reader, you can't help but lean in to hear more.

This book could be an excellent resource of encouragement for anyone with a chronic illness, or those supporting a loved one through such a challenge, but it is also a compelling, confronting and uplifting read for anyone who's ever wondered: 'where is God in this challenge?'

'Sam' recounts real-life struggles and just-as-real miracles, encouraging each reader to continue to believe, hope and love in the face of trials.

A personal story written with courage and compassion
4 stars By Jo-Anne Berthelsen, Nov 27 2016
Sam is the honest, heart-warming account of author Kath Henry's own personal years spent in supporting her son Sam through the rare and chronic illness of cyclic neutropenia. Kath does not hold back in sharing her deepest doubts and fears, as she strives to understand her son's condition and as their family seeks to provide him with the most appropriate medical care and support throughout his childhood and teenage years. But her reliance on God also shines through, as does her acknowledgement of God's provision of just the right connections with people at the right time, all of whom help Sam achieve his dream of completing his degree and studying overseas.
This book should greatly benefit those who are in the position of having to support a family member through chronic illness, particularly neutropenia. Yet it also has wider ramifications. For example, we all need to heed Kath's challenge to be faithful and compassionate in supporting those in such situations and also to be careful not to define people by the illnesses they may suffer--valuable lessons indeed.
