About "Samson and the Pirate Monks"

The ideal of manhood for many men is 'rugged individualism', like that of the biblical hero Samson. Through honest, poignant storytelling, Nate Larkin offers a radical, refreshing alternative to the Samson mindset, and a new type of men's ministry.
- Koorong

With no-holds-barred honesty and poignant storytelling, Nate Larkin introduces a model of community and friendship that is reinvigorating men's ministry across the country, a model he calls The Samson Society. Too many men see the biblical hero Samson as their model for manhood--a rugged individualist of the highest order. Yet, Samson's solitary successes were eventually overcome by moral weaknesses. Larkin, through the story of his own past and the stories of those in The Samson Society, offers a radical, refreshing alternative.

The subtitle of this book is "Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood", which could sound a little cheesy and may mislead men into thinking they are being roped into another church men's group - but nothing could be further from the truth - the Samson Society has changed thousands of lives.

It is very hard to find a men's book today in the Christian market which is confronting, honest, relevant and necessary all at the same time. SAMSON AND THE PIRATE MONKS by Nate Larkin is such a book.

It begins with a brief biography of the author. He gives a very revealing and open account of his life. He is transparent and honest about his battles with addiction and lust - the resulting guilt and self-loathing, and he openly recounts many shocking and disturbing memories that very nearly cost him his marriage and relationship with God.

Larkin discusses how men tend to keep their weaknesses and secrets to themselves - needing to appear in control and respectable. He uses Samson as an example. Samson was a loner whose prayer life with God (according to the book of Judges) was almost non-existent and he had a weakness - women, which led to his capture. Not until Samson was shamed and broken did he turn back to God, and as a result he destroyed the Temple and many Philistines ... and himself. For Larkin, this is typical of Christian men - unwilling and unsure how to deal with their carnal nature and a persistent enemy, they continue to believe they can do it alone but destruction is looming.

The book explains how the Samson Society was set up, how it operates separate from a church and church structure, how it has changed the lives of thousands of men already in the USA, and how to run your own group. It includes personal accounts from various Christian men (including Dan Haseltine from Jars of Clay) who are involved with a Samson group.

I personally believe this is the most important and appropriate men's book since WILD AT HEART. Men, this is a book you must read if you battle with any sort of lust. This is a must-buy book for Fathers Day. If you are a man or know a man, then I strongly recommend this book to you.
