Stuart Daniels has hit rock bottom. Once a celebrated and award-winning photojournalist, he is reeling from debt, a broken marriage, and crippling depression. The source of Stuart's grief is his most famous photo, a snapshot of brutality in the dangerous Congo. A haunting image that indicts him as a passive witness to gross injustice. Stuart is given one last chance to redeem his career: a make-or-break assignment covering the AIDS crisis in a small African country. It is here that Stuart meets Adanna, a young orphan fighting for survival in a community ravaged by tragedy and disease. What seemed like a chance encounter will forever change their lives. This sweeping, dramatic story explores the most vital social issues facing our world and offers a unique perspective on the tragedies taking place in Africa today. Readers will be encouraged to step out and help the "least of these."

Truly a potent work of art!
5 stars By Elizabeth Wiles, Oct 20 2009
This book is truly a potent work of art. The author, a well-known and respected photographer, is aching to tell you of the circumstances in which most people live in Swaziland, Africa. He tells this story fashioned from real people he knew and experiences that he had while working there.

It is a gripping story with a powerful message. The story is based around one girl, Andanna, who endures an incredibly hard and painful few years of life - one no child should ever suffer - yet she has strength and lives her life with faith and dignity.

There are many examples of the harsh reality of the peoples' lives and their desperate need for food and water. Their support is scarce and often fraught with political motivations. SCARED is heartbreaking, yet authored with such beautiful ease and poignant tenacity.

I would recommend this book to all - it's one you won't be putting down!
