After decades of failed relationships and painful drama, Donald Miller decided he?d had enough. Impressing people wasn?t helping him connect with anyone. He?d built a life of public isolation, yet he dreamed of meaningful relationships. So at forty years old he made a scary decision: to be himself no matter what it cost.

From the author of Blue Like Jazz comes a book about the risk involved in choosing to impress fewer people and connect with more, about the freedom that comes when we stop acting and start loving. It is a story about knocking down old walls to create a healthy mind, a strong family, and a satisfying career. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important.

Scary Close is Donald Miller at his best.

Awesomely disarming
5 stars By Chris, Jun 30 2015
This book is deceptively challenging. What I thought was a biographical commentary on his own life, turns out to be some much needed social commentary on the western world and how we do relationships.

Miller delves deep into his own personal life and shares struggles, fears, successes, and attitudes that have shaped him for the better or worst. Peppered throughout each chapter are insights he has gained from the wisdom of others, and how after applying their principles and feedback, illustrates guiding principles for his readers to also apply.

His disarming and honest approach is both refreshing and engaging. The level of transparency at times is confronting, not because of the content, but because of how it challenges the reader to do so likewise. The book is well written and easy to absorb and be absorbed into. His section on parenting contains a gripping story from Paul Young (author of The Shack) that is worth the price alone. As too is his chapter on manipulation and how we all too often get caught up in predictable cycles of control or dominance.

I read this over one weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the experienced. I highly recommend.
