Counselling and the Human Condition through the Lens of Scripture

Essays by a highly regarded biblical counsellor. Some of these pieces exegete Scripture with a counselling perspective, while others recast specific "psychological" problems.

"Dave Powlison has profoundly impacted my ministry by teaching me the discipline of seeing life through the lens of Scripture rather than the other way around. The crumbs from Dave's table-his most casual comments-have nourished me for years." - Ken Sande President, Peacemaker Ministries

"In the book, David's conviction that for us to rightly understand people, their problems and the solution to those problems, we must see them through the lens of Scripture comes through with clarity. With fresh insight and skilful creativity, he demonstrates that the Bible when rightly understood speaks with the full weight of God's own authority. " - Wayne Mack Director, Strengthening Ministries International

"If you need help understanding your own life or desire to help others do the same, Seeing with New Eyes will transform your perspective and focus your faith on the sufficient truth of Scripture and on our Scripture's God. I heartily recommend it!" - Elyse Fitzpatrick, author and conference speaker

Reading this book is a rich experience for counsellors and for everyone who wants to apply God's Word to his or her life. - John Frame, Reformed Theological Seminary, Florida

DAVID POWLISON is the editor of The Journal of Biblical Counselling, teaches at the Christian Counselling and Educational Foundation (CCEF) in Glenside, Pennsylvania and at Westminster Theological Seminary, and counsels at CCEF. He is the author of Power Encounters: Reclaiming Spiritual Warfare; Competent to Counsel?: The History of a Conservative Protestant Anti-Psychiatry Movement; and numerous articles on counselling and on the relationship between faith and psychology.

Getting to the heart of it
5 stars By Rory, Nov 19 2016
On the surface this book doesn't seem that groundbreaking- looking at life and problems through the lens of scripture.
But once you start reading Powlison digs deep and uses the wonderful truths of the gospel and who God is to bring you a glorious picture of God and your need for Him.
I read this book hoping to learn in order to help others, but found myself growing in my own relationship with God. Scripture is clearly expounded and applied directly to the human condition, showing our ultimate lack and God's abundant grace and provision.

Profound
5 stars By Steve N, Apr 26 2016
I've been recommended this book for a while - as a book that teaches us to read the Bible with a clear picture of who Christ is, what He's done for us, and how we can read the Bible in such a way to find our place in the redemptive story of God. The sections on Ephesians and the Psalms were deeply impacting - especially seeking God and His transforming grace in all of life, in all its complexity. This is a book I'll go back to time and time again - as a resource to help me minister grace to others, and for God's grace in my own life.
