Having escaped Egypt with the other Hebrews during the Exodus, Shira is now living in freedom at the foot of Mt. Sinai, upon which rests the fiery glowing Cloud containing the shekinah glory of God. When the people disobey Yahweh and build a golden idol, the ensuing chaos gives Shira an unexpected opportunity to learn the arts of midwifery. Although her mother wishes for her to continue in the family weaving trade, Shira's gifts shine brightest when she assists with deliveries. In defiance of her mother, Shira pursues her heart's calling to become an apprentice midwife.

When a delivery goes horribly wrong, Shira finds herself bound to a man who betrayed her, the caretaker of three young children, and the target of a vengeful woman whose husband was killed by Shira's people, the Levites. As contention between the Hebrew tribes and the foreigners fans the flames of another dangerous rebellion, Shira will come face-to-face with the heartbreak of her past that she has kept hidden for so long. How can she let go of all that has defined her to accept the love she's denied herself and embrace who she truly is?

Thoroughly Engaging
5 stars By Jacqui, Oct 02 2017
This is the second book in the Out of Egypt series. It continues to follow the same family from book one but this time we move forward journeying with Shira, the Hebrew slave from book one. Our Israelite nation is now at the foot of the mountain for the year. Here they are being formed into a nation, hopefully united under Yahweh. This story again helped me broaden my understanding on what this time would have been like. This is an incredibly encouraging story. I finished it with a greater sense of awe for our God

Beautiful
5 stars By Monique, Nov 18 2016
A beautiful sequel to 'Counted With The Stars' with the same great characters, this time told from Shira's point of view.
Shadow of the Storm is thoroughly engaging that stole my heart. Once started, I didn't want to put it down. This is a series you need on your bookcase.

Beautiful - not to be missed!
5 stars By Katie Donovan, Nov 08 2016
Shira's story engaged my heart so thoroughly that I did not want to put it down once I had started; and if that wasn't enough, it also opened my eyes to a whole new understanding of what life may have been like for those who left Egypt in the Exodus. The story is told from the point of view of two very different women: Shira, the young Levite woman who is Kiya's friend in Counted with the Stars; and Dvorah, the daughter of an Egyptian man and his Danite whore, whose husband is killed by the Levites as part of Yahweh's punishment for worshipping the golden calf. Shira is one of the most gentle, nurturing characters I have ever come across, but she also has physical and emotional scars that mean marriage and children of her own are unlikely to be in her future. Dvorah, by way of contrast, is hard and bitter. And so lost that my heart could not help but go out to her, in spite of her actions. I love the way in which the author captured the depth of emotions involved in childbirth and motherhood - both biological and adoptive. I felt the pain, I felt the joy. And there were times when my heart was swollen with the beautiful words Ayal (the main male character) spoke to Shira. A beautiful story not to be missed.
