We begin with a thought experiment. Modern critical biblical scholarship often points out how the church's teachings about Jesus have become encrusted with tradition so that it is
hard to see what the core documents-the New Testament-really say about him. Now, with the insight of 200 years of modern critical scholarship and assuming an audience that includes both the well-churched and the non-churched, how should the church present the story and identity of the central personality of their faith, Jesus of Nazareth? Many people will be surprised at the story they hear.

Foundational reading
5 stars By Jacqui, Jun 01 2016
I read this book as it was required reading for N. T. Wright's course Simply Jesus. I am so glad that I had to read it. I found it easy to read and understand. Reading it has given me a greater understanding and love of Jesus. Beginning with the teaching of what the world was like when Jesus began his ministry and what those living then were expecting in a Messiah and then moving through his actions, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. Although I have been a Christ follower for a long time, the things that I learnt from this book have helped me to make sense of and understand much more of the bible. This book is for anyone who wants to know Jesus more regardless of where you are in your journey of faith.

Basic Reading
5 stars By Sue M, Dec 23 2015
Tom Wright's books are always informative, easy to read and contain much to teach us about what Christianity means. 'Simply Jesus' explains Jesus' life, work and what He should mean to us today. It has so much to say that I found it necessary to read the book twice, and will be reading it again as each time I gain more insight into the life and work of my Saviour. Whether a new Christian or one of many years' standing, this book should be on everyone's bookshelf (after thorough reading of course!).

Great introduction to Jesus
4 stars By David N, Feb 04 2014
Tom Wright (also known as N. T. Wright) is widely believed to be one of the top New Testament scholars, and an expert on Jesus (particularly the historical studies and the context of Jesus). Simply Jesus is a great introduction to Jesus-scholarship, outlining some of the key points about Jesus, like the title 'Son of God'. Tom Wright analyses the issues that we deal with when we study Jesus, which distort our understanding of Jesus. By dealing with these issues, Tom Wright removes some of the cloudiness that can infect our conclusions about Jesus. I would not recommend this book as a be-all-and-end-all resource, but it will do you good to read it alongside other books on Jesus (especially the New Testament!).
