Essential reading
5 stars By Kieran Carr, Dec 05 2016
In Spiritual Leadership, J. Oswald Sanders teaches on leadership by expounding the Scriptures and exploring the lives of eminent Christian leaders. The argument that is implicit throughout the book is that Christian leaders must be spiritual leaders who are equipped with God's Word and Holy Spirit as their most potent weapons.

There are two particularly brilliant chapters in Spiritual Leadership. Chapter 11 argues that what separates leaders from other people is their discipline in time management:
The manner in which he employs the surplus of hour after provision has been made for work, meals, and sleep will make him either a mediocrity or a man to be reckoned with. Habits are formed in youth which make or mar a life. Leisure hours constitute a glorious opportunity or a subtle danger.

Chapter 12 argues that what separates leaders from other people is their reading:

The man who desires to grow spiritually and intellectually will be constantly at his books...many claim that they have no time to read. This excuse is never valid with a spiritual leader.

What a classic!
4 stars By Tanwin, Jul 10 2013
First published in 1967, Spiritual Leadership is one of the best-known and most-loved books on Christian leadership. John MacArthur, Charles Colson and John C Maxwell are among of the great Christian leaders that were influenced by this book. Although the book is easy to read and understand but because it was originated as a series of sermons, this book reads more like a sermon outline than a book. However I found this approach to be unique and engaging. Just like a sermon, some of the chapters can be repetitive; however the emphasis seemed to be appropriate and necessary.

Spiritual Leadership offers a more balanced book in regards that it also mentions the cost of leadership, responsibilities and even the tests of leadership. The book feels more complete as it begins with the search for spiritual leadership and ends with replacing, reproducing and even perils of leaderships. Spiritual Leadership may be considered as a classic in church leadership, but that does not mean it has little significance and relevance in today's churches. This book has become the standard in many leadership levels in churches and spiritual organisations. The book covers a wide range of topics on leadership and each with in-depth and well-scoped explanation and arguments. Although the book reads more of a series of lectures or sermons, it still offers a great range of points and arguments on biblical leadership.
