A great, intentionally specific, book that is written in memorable way to capture your imagination and inspire your personal leadership.
John Maxwell's Qualities of a Leader is aimed for people who want to be effective in their leadership, only in a broader and more secular context. Qualities of a Leader focuses more on the recognising, development, and refining personal characteristics needed to become an effective leader, hence this book is very practical. John Maxwell approaches the book by going straight to the essential qualities needed to become an effective leader. With little outlines on the basics of leaderships, for example the process of leaders selection, Maxwell assumed that the audience of his books are those who are already in leadership positions. It is clear that Maxwell's perspective comes from a secular world, however this does not mean that the qualities mentioned in his books are unbiblical. Many qualities mentioned in his books are clearly influenced by Sanders' perspective on ministry. For example the mention of humility as one of the qualities. I found this surprising to include humility as one of the key qualities of a leader in a secular book. Even though Maxwell is no longer pastoring a church, it is clear that Biblical values are still influencing his teachings. This book feels a short-and-simple, yet practical leadership tool. This book clearly builds leaders in a unique way, where its aim is to be practical and easy to remember while spending some time on each quality before moving on. This has been proven to be quite an effective way to implement the book in churches and other organisations.
