The argument behind The 360 Leader is that leaders need to learn to lead 'up', 'across', and 'down'. A core thesis of Maxwell's is that most of the leaders to which he is writing are not 'at the top' of their organisation but 'in the middle' - this is why leaders need to lead in every direction. A great strength of this book is that there is an online leadership survey which readers are encouraged to fill before they read the book. The topics and questions of the survey relate precisely to each heading in the book. This enables the reader to have an assessment of their personal strengths and weaknesses in each area which is covered. A weakness of this book is that it is over structured and each segment is disconnected from the one previous and the one after. It may also be that Maxwell applies his leadership principles too broadly - his audience includes corporates and church leaders and therefore lacks focus.
