The Preexistent Son

Simon J Gathercole

$55.00

Paperback
This book challenges the consensus among biblical scholars that among the four Gospels only John gives evidence for Jesus' heavenly identity and pre-existence.

- Publisher In this challenging book, rising New Testament scholar Simon Gathercole contradicts a commonly held view among biblical scholars -- that the Gospel of John is the only Gospel to give evidence for Jesus heavenly identity and preexistence. "The Preexistent Son" demonstrates that Matthew, Mark, and Luke were also well aware that the Son of God existed with the Father prior to his earthly ministry. Gathercole supports his argument by considering the I have come sayings of Jesus and strikingly similar angelic sayings discovered in Second Temple and Rabbinic literature. Further, he considers related topics such as Wisdom Christology and the titles applied to Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels.Gathercoles carefully researched work should spark debate among Synoptic scholars and extend the understanding of anyone interested in this New Testament question.

Scholarly study of the Pre-existence of Jesus
4 stars By Wally Bocos, Jan 04 2018
Gathercole Makes the case for a pre-existent Christology within the first century mediterranean milieu by carefully and meticulously examining the original sources.

A lot of references to the works of the apocrypha, rabbinic and early literature, making this column a scholarly study. Gathercole employs an; "I have come" purpose formula; to demonstrate a tradition not used by human figures, but angelic, and thus establish a logic that applies to Jesus.

By investigating the way biblical writers wrote about angels, Gathercole uses the prescribed literary formula to highlight angelic visits. Setting his argument within angelology Gathercole connects the saying with purpose to derive pre-existence with Jesus. Not to say; Jesus is an angel, but the mission and saying is of the same kind. Hence, Gathercole establishes a literary formula within the biblical narrative that points to the Pre-existence of Jesus our Lord.

At times the extra-biblical references can be tedious and a chore to rummage through. 4 oo 5
