Mallory's search for happiness leads her to faraway place. But there she finds heartache and betrayal. Can the only man she's ever loved rescue her before it's too late?

Tate Webber has loved Mallory Hammond for years. He plans to marry her someday, but not until he has his career and life in order. Mallory is in love with Tate, but his unwillingness to commit has created a rift between them. So when Mallory's new boss introduces her to his cousin, she's surprised by his charming, exotic ways and delights in his attention. This exciting stranger begins to sway her thinking about her lifelong dreams and her religious beliefs.

As their online relationship develops, he invites her to visit his homeland in the Middle East, promising her a traditional life based on commitment to family-something she's never had and always wanted. In a bold move-and with lots of resistance from Tate and those closest to her-Mallory decides to leave the only life she's ever known to meet this man on the other side of the world.

Tate begs her not to go, but Mallory embarks on the dangerous journey anyway, only to discover how swiftly and easily promises can be broken. Her new friend is not who he says he is. Tate must risk his life to rescue the only woman he's ever loved. Can he reach Mallory . . . before it's too late?

Frustrating
2 stars By Iola, Nov 06 2014
Mallory is my least-favourite kind of fictional heroine: noble, academically bright but nave, with little understanding of life outside her first-world bubble. She shows herself to be easily led--in the wrong direction--as she makes a vital decision based on some basic internet research, and has no idea what she's letting herself in for. I hoped I'd be wrong about the way the story would progress, but I wasn't.

However, I really liked Tate. There was a nobility and intelligence about him that Mallory lacked, but he still had faults, one being Mallory. My dislike of her aside, Tate is a committed Catholic who attends Mass and believes Jesus is the only way to God. Mallory has no personal faith, and has never read the Bible, yet is happy to start reading the Quran-so why is Tate in a relationship with her?

I can imagine a lot of people are going to rave about this novel. It's based on real-life events the author was personally involved in-but I didn't find that out to the end. Maybe I'd have been able to feel more sympathy for Mallory if I'd known.

difficult read
2 stars By sarah, Nov 03 2014
Beth Wiseman is a talented author and has written many excellent novels. Unfortunately, this is not one of them.

Mallory is a young woman questioning the whys in life after losing her best friend several years earlier. She becomes embroiled in a dangerous scheme involving people she trusts. I found the story fairly unrealistic and Mallory difficult to empathise with. No person would truly make the choices Mallory does. I recommend missing this book, and choosing another of Beth's novels instead.
