Abigail Foster fears she will end up a spinster, especially as she has little dowry to improve her charms and the one man she thought might marry her--a longtime friend--has fallen for her younger, prettier sister.

When financial problems force her family to sell their London home, a strange solicitor arrives with an astounding offer: the use of a distant manor house abandoned for eighteen years. The Fosters journey to imposing Pembrooke Park and are startled to find it entombed as it was abruptly left: tea cups encrusted with dry tea, moth-eaten clothes in wardrobes, a doll's house left mid-play . . .

The handsome local curate welcomes them, but though he and his family seem to know something about the manor's past, the only information they offer Abigail is a warning: Beware trespassers who may be drawn by rumors that Pembrooke contains a secret room filled
with treasure.

Hoping to improve her family's financial situation, Abigail surreptitiously searches for the hidden room, but the arrival of anonymous letters addressed to her, with clues about the room and the past, bring discoveries even more startling. As secrets come to light, will Abigail find the treasure and love she seeks...or very real danger?

I fell completely in love with this novel!!! The characters were so relatable and well portrayed, by the end I felt like I had made new friends. Fabulously written and filled with intrigue, it's a book to win a place on your favourites list!!!

Regency Intrigue
5 stars By Hannah, Feb 10 2015
This was a great book, though not one I'd recommend reading late at night or in a creaky house... unless, of course, you enjoy the thrill of jumping at every little sound and wondering whether that shadow that just passed your window was a murderer... I really enjoyed the characters and the way they dealt with the challenges they faced, with a few minor sermons along the way (which fitted, since the hero is a pastor).

Julie Klassen is a brilliant author and reading her books feels like you truly have been transported to the halls of London and its intrigues - which is either good or bad depending on whether you enjoy suspense or not! This book certainly had me captivated until the end, and guessing all the way as I tried to figure out the mysteries amongst the rumours.

An incredibly well-written book, filled with historical facts and not-too-fictitious characters. But again, with murderers, secret rooms and treasure hunters who'll stop at nothing - not everyone's cup of tea.

Classic Julie Klassen
5 stars By Iola, Dec 11 2014
The writing was excellent, the characters interesting, and it was a complex plot, with several unexpected twists and turns. I liked that. I especially liked the fact that while I'd worked out one of the character was hiding a major secret, I was completely wrong in what that secret was-yet when it was revealed, it made perfect sense.

Julie Klassen is one of my favourite authors, I haven't especially enjoyed her last couple of novels, which seemed to lack the original spark which first drew me to her writing. I'm pleased to report that The Secret of Pembrooke Park is as good as those early books, with a healthy mix of mystery, suspense and romance (and a choice of possible suitors, with Gilbert, William and Miles).

Recommended for fans of historical romance, especially the Regency period.
