Meet the Author

William P Young

Paul was born a Canadian and along with three younger siblings was raised among a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea (West Papua). The family returned to Canada where his father pastored a number of churches for various denominations. By the time he entered Canadian Bible College, Paul had attended a dozen schools. He completed his undergraduate degree in religion at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. While in Oregon, Paul attended seminary and worked on staff at a large church where he met and married Kim. Together they celebrate the wastefulness of grace with their six children, two daughters-in-law, and now two grandchildren. His worldwide phenomenon, The Shack, was written for his six children, with no thought or intention to publish. He says "It is as much a surprise to me as to anyone else that I am now an author. And a best-selling author at that!

The most impacting DVD in my Christian walk
5 stars By Elise , Oct 16 2017
This movie will impact your heart as you get a revelation of what things like suffering and sin and justice look like from God's point of view. It has given me such a clearer picture of the beautiful love God has towards us.
It was also a reminder that life here is so temporary, and heaven is waiting for us.
I was able to share this as an evangelistic tool with my unsaved neighbor who has recently lost her husband who had met the Lord only weeks before his death, knowing this would be of such comfort to her and remind her that she could make a decision that would affect her eternity.

2Timothy 3:5 - avoid it.
1 stars By Daniel, Oct 07 2017
I could easily imagine what Paul would be saying to Timothy about such a bookmovie - avoid such teaching, for it has led many astray and destroyed the faith of some. We have become so culturally accepting in society that now in the church we are tolerating heresy.

First - God the Father portrayed as a woman? First up - God isn't a bloke, there is nothing blokey about his maleness, God is Spirit. Having said that, God has decided to reveal himself to us as Father and as a He. We need to uphold that while minimising the blokeyness of Him. There is something about God's eternal character that makes Him a Father. In an analogous way, but still, it is something which reflects the truth of what a Father is. Put it this way - if God isn't a Father, then you're not his adopted son. There's something about God's fatherliness that makes it possible for us to be sons of God.

Second - universalism really? Do I even need to talk about how heretical that is? Scripture is packed full of Jesus telling the crowds that those who don't believe in the Son will face the wrath of God. Let's not stop reading at John 3:16, but continue until the last verse of the chapter! Not to mention revelation 14 and 19 etc etc.

Avoid this movie and read 2Timothy.

Not as good as the book but still very worthwhile
4 stars By David, Oct 01 2017
I guess many movies are not as good as the book, and I feel this is the case here. I personally found the book life changing, so maybe I had unrealistic expectations. Still,I just wish the movie had some of the deeper content as found in the book. If you liked the book, by all means get the movie, but realise the book has the advantage of really fleshing out some of the good God vs evil in the world questions.

GREAT MOVIE
5 stars By Keona, Sep 21 2017
The whole movie is amazing. Such a powerful movie for anyone who has dealt with grief, loss and heartache - which let's face it is everyone! So a movie that everyone should watch!
SPOIL ALERT if you haven't watched it.
I LOVE the fact that God appears at first as a woman - it is said that we are created in God's image which is both male AND female. Also when you get to know Mack (the main character) it totally makes sense why God appears as mainly a woman to him.
I laughed so much when Mack tried to walk on water without Jesus. A painful but true lesson to learn!
I appreciated how there were no graphic details (imagery) around the death, but the emotional element was allowed to unfold.
The ending was different to the book but I think I got why.
Highly recommend watching! Just be sure to have tissues ready and maybe a hand to hold!
