Throw away your Flannelgraphs...The prodigal son. The good Samaritan. The treasure hidden in a field. Most of us have heard Jesus's parables before. Yet if these stories strike us as merely sweet, heartwarming, or sentimental, we can be sure we've misread them. In The Storytelling God, pastor Jared Wilson helps us to see how Jesus's parables reveal profound spiritual truths about God, humanity, the world, and the future. Discarding the notion that Christ's parables are nothing more than moralistic fables, this book highlights how each one is designed to drive us to Jesus in awe, need, faith, and worship.

Gospel teaching from the parables
5 stars By Charles, Dec 15 2014
The Storytelling God by Jared Wilson is a great book that engages with the often difficult parables of Jesus. The book begins with an explanation of what the parables are and how they work, which is one of the strongest sections of the book. The connection he makes between the Kingdom and the cross is excellent. Following this, he seeks to explain the Gospel from around five parables, which include the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Sons among others. There is great encouragement to be had here. He then reflects on the use of parables in the OT and on how Jesus is a living parable, before concluding. This book often feels like he is preaching, which is good for the heart. If, however, you are looking for a commentary on the parables or something academic, this book might not be for you. Also, it would've been nice if he actually wrote about a few more parables, five seemed a bit short. All in all a fantastic book in drawing out the Gospel from the parables of Jesus. Highly recommended.
