Review of The Strange Car
5 stars By Lisa, Jan 21 2012
The Strange Car is a children’s book which tells the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus (Luke 19). The only difference is, in The Strange Car the characters are all vehicles. Tony Tractor, Luxurious Lucy, Hot Headed Harry and their friends attend their local church when they see a new, strange car enter the car park. The friends don’t take kindly to Lin Su, the new electric car, until Old Mr T relates the story about Zacchaeus (a strange car with an engine in the back instead of the front, and owned by a parking inspector). As the story of Zacchaeus unfolds the cars begin to realise how it relates to them and their treatment of Lin Su.

What I particularly liked about The Strange Car is that it not only relates a familiar Bible story using language and concepts that children can understand, but shows children how to apply the story to their own lives. The characters in the story are fun, interesting and engaging. My children enjoyed the book thoroughly, even though the ‘take home’ value for them differed considerably. While my 7-year-old son was provoked to consider how the story applied to him and his group of school friends, my 5-year-old daughter was more interested to know whether Zacchaeus was a Porche or not (she takes after her father).

The Strange Car is a great book and ideal for children of all ages.
