:Grasp the Majesty, Beauty, and Significance of God's Dwelling Places

At various points in Israel's history, God dwelt in specific, significant places, most notably in the tabernacle and the temple. These structures, meticulously planned, extravagantly furnished, and regularly frequented by the devout, were more than just places of worship and sacrifice. They were pictures of God's relationship with his chosen people and of the atoning work that would be done by the Messiah. To understand the tabernacle and the temple, then, is to understand how we are brought into God's family through the sacrifice of his only Son, Jesus.

Visually stunning and theologically rich, this full-color resource brings together the latest scholarship and archeological discoveries to bring God's dwelling places alive for modern believers. It places these important structures in their historical and theological contexts, connects them with the overall biblical story, and shows how they bring meaning and depth to the faith of Christians today.

A Fascinating Study!
5 stars By Dr. Bernard Low, Apr 03 2017
In this book by J. Daniel Hays, dean of the School of Christian Studies and professor of biblical studies at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas, the author does a masterful job in showing how the biblical narratives or instructions relating to the Garden of Eden, the tabernacle, the temple, Christ, the church and individual believers are united by the important theme of God's presence dwelling with his people. This theme started way back in the Garden of Eden which is, arguably, a sort of garden-temple indwelt by God with Adam as the first priest-king. The tabernacle and the temple, built under Moses' and Solomon's leadership respectively, contained motifs of Eden in its furnishings and reiterated the theme of God's dwelling with his people. Interestingly, when Hays discusses Solomon's temple, he perceptively points out how the narrative does not mention God coming down to dwell in the temple which was built with the help of a pagan craftsman chosen by Solomon but not by God. When Israel sank into deep idolatry, God left the temple permanently and Israel was sent into captivity. God's presence returned to Israel only in the person of Jesus Christ whose atoning death paved the way open for sinners to come direct into God's presence and for God to indwell them. The perfect reality of God dwelling with his people will be realized in the new heavens and new earth. A fascinating study!
